$2,400 to have a guy dig a three-foot deep
hole and tell him that the hole was full of
sand? Was the fact that the hole was at the
beach a coincidence?
Is it true that the originator of the phrase
"Board To Death," known only to many as
Crazy John, is a heavy kingpin in the
teachings of martial arts? Furthermore, could
it be true that his teachings are conducted
at a posh facility in downtown S.F.? Is he plan-
ning on competing in a major tournament of
masters in Hong Kong?

Sordid details are trickling in from Munster,
West Germany, the site of World cup '88.
Members of team Santa Cruz-Grosso,
Jason Jesse, etc.-are wondering who's
been jacking up their hotel phone bill, which
at last report totalled $1,500 U.S.
Our travelling photo editor managed to
discombobulate the band Wall of Voodoo
who were staying in the same hotel.
Ffej Hedges nearly became a local, stop-
ping just ten feet shy of a change in nationali-
ty. His adaptability earned him sweeping first
place honors in the amateur street and vert
competitions. Monte Nolder took himself out

practice. The visiting American pro and am
skaters unknowingly broke every rule by
doing just what they always do. Maybe next
year there will be a set of European rules and
a set of American rules. Eric Dressen slept
through his final streetstyle run.
Also, hard-to-believe (or not so hard-to-
believe) rumors of fists, blood and flying spit
at the post contest celebration. Accusing
fingers point to a few Californians, but
nobody really cares. Watch for details in next
month's issue. And if that's not enough for
