HENRY
ROLLINS
(from page 95) choice, when I die I
want it to be over with. I believe
in what Nietzsche says about
death. Every day you should be
pulling yourself steadily towards
death. That's the way you live the
hardest, by working consciously
towards death and making your
life a full, rich experience. I'm a
little older now, and I think I'm
more patient and understanding.
I'm also a much stronger person
than I used to be. With this wider
understanding of things, I've
started a label called High On
War. All the profits are going to
go to battered women and bat-
tered children. I'm red hot on that
project. I want to do more work
that helps young folks.
What made you choose that
particular cause?
Because battered women and
children are people who really
don't have a chance, especially
battered children. I wasn't hung
upside down and skinned alive
in closets when I was growing up.
but I could tell you some stories.
about my upbringing that would
make you downright uncomfor-
table. And I know that a lot of kids
have had and are having it way
worse than I did. Luckily I have
lots of spastic energy, and I can
go out and do something about it.
Speaking of spastic energy,
you used to be really into
skating, didn't you?
Yeah, from the age of fourteen
through twenty that's all I did
besides eat and sleep. You know
how it is, when you get that skate
jones. I did it and did it and did
it, and I don't do it any more. I've
got a bad right wrist which I could
break at any time and I can't risk
that. I still see Thrasher in the
stores and I like to check it out
and see all the kids skating. I
remember a long time ago when
I was at Winchester Skate
Park...one of the most amazing
parks there ever was and they
jackhammered that keyhole. You
ever skate that keyhole? You just
wanted to camp out and live in
it. It was the most perfect pool
ever. I mean, it was speed city in
there. No kinks. It was beautiful.
But anyway, I was there in sum-
mer of '80 or '79 and I was wat
ching Steve Caballero and he
was pulling off the hairiest
moves, just one after another. I'd
never seen anyone skate like that
before. Then afterwards, I saw
everyone skate like that.
Everyone was catching these
amazing airs and it made me
remember seeing Alva, Jay
Adams and Stacy Peralta skate.
I really miss seeing someone like
Stacy who brings the surfing ele-
ment into skating. It looked like
Tai Chi when he skated com-
pared to these guys just going
move, transition, move, transi-
tion, so orchestrated. Guys like
Adams, Alva and Peralta really
blew me away. Those other guys.
blow me away, but it's not the
same thing.
Still go to 7-11?
Oh yes. I love 7-11. They're like
me, 24 hours a day, 365 days a
year. I don't close, why should
anything else close?
What about Madonna?
Madonna is an icon. She's
driven. When she's not on tour,
she's in a movie. When she's not
in a movie, she's on Broadway.
For those readers who don't
know, those were the topics of
two articles you wrote for Spin
magazine. Although Spin is
back in print, you aren't writing
for them any more. Why?
I quit Spin because: A. I didn't
like the way they edited my last
article, B. I did not like the review
they gave the Swans, and C. I did
not like the article they did on
John Lee Hooker. It was a pedan-
tic, stupid article on one of the
greatest, most atomic guitar
player/singers there has ever
been. They wrote this ridiculous
article about him and I said "Uh
uh, I quit." I wrote a letter to
Hooker. I called up Gira from the
Swans. I said, "I quit that
magazine because of what they
said about you."
Do you still talk to the guys in
Black Flag?
Nope. I talked to Greg Ginn on
the phone for about six minutes
earlier this year to get a tax
return. I don't know what those
people are doing. If they put out
a record or do a show, I'll check
it out, but on a personal level I'm
not interested in hanging out with
them. I'm busy with my own trip.
In closing, do you have any
message for our readers?
Just skate safe and continue to
destroy reality. Get on our mail-
ing list-it's P.O. Box 2461
Redondo Beach, CA 90278. Our
info line, which has all the tour
dates and what's happening, is
213-661-6515. You're encour
aged to call or write in any time.
And if they don't like you skating.
in their pool, fuck 'em.
