The hallways of the eighth floor were covered with mustard, catsup, beer and cigarette ashes. The
ashtray by the elevator was filled with empty beer bottles, and the elevator floor was carpeted by torn-off
shirt and pants pockets, other scraps of torn clothing and broken bottles. The mirrored walls were covered
with stickers, and frightened people scurried down the hallways to their hopefully private rooms.

The streets of Toronto were plastered with
skate stickers. Most visible, thorough and
creative were the spicy, sassy and saucy
Salba stickers, which occupied a spot every
ten feet of sidewalk. Various restaurants now

The city slept little due to another night of
American occupation. At the Ramada Inn's
lounge, a restless, eager to impress and
depress pack of skaters maintained a high-
volume-dull-roar, occasionally yelling out a
request to the piano-bar pianist.

"Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road!"
The pianist hurridly wrapped up her set
and took a twenty-minute break. At the bar,
about eight large veterans of the second
"big-one" started singing some Bavarian
beer-hall chanteys, loudly and proudly.
The skating clan countered with a brazen
version of the theme from "The Brady
Bunch." For a frozen moment, high tension
emanated from the silver-haired ex- shock
troops who drifted into another uplifting.

Island." It looked like the makings of another
"Beer Hall Putsch" until the "Peace
Waitress" devised a truce through a fresh

Stacy Peralta sat in the backseat of a rental
car with all the windows rolled up. He was
tired. He was sick and tired of having to be
surprised all of the time.
