backyard and I had never skated one
before so I was scared to drop in.
Finally my dad said if I dropped in
five times in five minutes he'd give
me $50 and if I could do a 180° turn

We knew we were making a big
sacrifice. Now we know what it is. Ted

I'm writing this letter to say thanks
for such a cool mag. It's one of the
very few that I'm allowed to have in
jail. I've been in here for five months,
waiting to go to trial for "Battery on
a Law Enforcement Officer." One day
in November a buddy and me were
goofing off in a parking lot when a
guy grabbed me and pulled me off
my board, causing me to slam into
the pavement and break my jaw. The
first thing I did was grab for the guy's
shirt as I was falling and he slugged
me. The next thing I know I'm being
read my rights and cuffed by this guy
who just broke my jaw. Surprise, he's
an off-duty detective who doesn't
believe in skateboarding in public
areas. Now I'm sitting in my cage,
thankful that the wires are out of my
mouth and now I've just got to hope
my lawyer can keep me from doing
five years of state time for grabbing
an officer's shirt after he knocked me
down. Well, keep up the good work
and I'll keep reading THRASHER
and dreaming.

TEACH A NEW DOG OLD
TRICKS
I just got back from the best skate
session ever! We didn't have a
launch ramp or parking blocks of any
kind, just a few cement stairs, a 5-foot
long welcome mat and a school park-
ing lot. My friends and I had just wat-
ched "Skateboard Madness" featur-
ing Stacy Peralta, and we decided to
have a "70s day." We loosened up
our trucks and got started. I guess
I thought those old tricks were fun-
ny looking and not very difficult but
now I see how wrong I was. We put
our skates at the bottom of the steps
and after a lot of our own blood left
our bodies, we made it. We were
proud of ourselves and gained new
respect for the 70s skaters. The rest
of the night we did those type of
tricks, like jumping off one board.

It was the best. We just wanted to
thank those who started it and kept
it going for the rest of us.

SPEECH OF FAITH
Once a little girl was forced by her
parents to join some school activity
instead of "wasting" time on a
skateboard. She decided to join the
speech club and did a demonstration
speech on...skating! Her peers said
she would never go far on that sub-
ject. Like hell! I'm going to the state
finals next weekend! Skate and make
others relate.

My sister, who is 21, has never
really paid that much attention to my
skating until she went to the Savan-
nah Slamma street contest with me
and some friends. The girl had a
hissy! She loved Tommy Guerrero
and Scott Oster, but she fell head
over heels for Jeff Grosso. When we
got home she took all of my back
issues of THRASHER and devoured
them. The faces of Tommy Guerrero,
Scott Oster, and especially Jeff
Grosso no longer exist in any of my
back issues. They're all on her wall.
The moral of this story is: never take
your older sister to a contest, and if
you do, hide your back issues.
