"DRESEN
(Continued from page 107) then blunt
again, concave, tri-tail-are they
really necessary?
Sometimes. Some companies just
make boards so they'll be more
desirable to kids. Most pro shapes
are the shapes the guys need to
skate on, like the Christian shape.
That's his shape and he rips on it.
He couldn't ride on my board and I
couldn't ride on his. That's the shape
he's been working on for years.
Should the kid buying the board
look at the shape and not the
skater?
No. If I was a kid I'd compare myself
to how that skater rides. When I was
a kid, I always wanted a Jay Adams
model because I could relate to his
skateboarding and how he stood on
the board. If I was buying a board
now, I'd probably ride a Caballero
model. I don't think I skate exactly like
Caballero, but I like how he rides.
Boards are really important to me.
When Jim makes me a board, if it's
cut out slightly off it messes me up.
Skateboards are really important to
my riding. I guess because for ollies
I just need a certain shape.
Are skaters athletes?
Yeah, they're athletes, man. The top
guys are true athletes; they're in
great shape. They have to go out
there and skate their asses off. At Ir-
vine I could tell those guys were so
tired, and the kids wanted more.
Sometimes they expect them to go
out there and skate forever. Those
guys, they're my heroes.
What do you think keeps you in
shape for skating?
Just getting enough sleep, being
rested enough. That's why I never go
out partying at night anymore. 1
usually try and get home and get to

bed at a decent hour. I try to eat right.
That's one thing about contests and
demos, you can't eat your regular
diet. You're on the road and have to
eat whatever you can get.
Who are some of your favorite
skaters?
In vert, Lee Ralph. He's just so rad.
It doesn't even matter if he's top in
the placings; in my book he's still one
of the raddest skaters I've ever seen.
I like all of these amateur vert skaters,
like Mike Crescini, Chris Borst,
Reese Simpson-I really like how
those guys skate. I like guys who are
all-around skators, who look good on
their boards. They look like they live
on their skateboards, like their
skateboards are just an extension of
themselves.
What's the average Eric Dressen,
out the door?
Just curbs, lots of curb slappys,
railslide things, schoolyards and get-
ting in a car and going to some other
banks, schoolyards in the city.
What are your favorite skate spots?
Venice banks. I like going to Upland
a lot. El Paso is great because there
are a lot of ditches. South Bank,
Charlie's ramp, Max's Ramp, Bryce's
ramp, San Francisco.
You mentioned South Bank,
Venice High and Upland, all three
areas that might be destroyed for
reasons that don't necessarily
have to do with skating. How do
you feel about that?
It makes me depressed. I could cry
about the Beverly Bowl. Or LAX,
whenever someone brings up LAX
we all get so bummed. It was a bank
with a double sided curb on top and
a hip, it was just so rad to railslide
or whatever. We really progressed
skating there, me, Natas, Julien and
Gonz. It gave us a whole different
look at skateboarding.
Well, in closing, is there any
message you'd like to give other
skaters?
Just have fun and don't worry at all
about having a sponsor. Don't worry
about what the pros do, just have fun
when you go skate. Enjoy it while you
can because you can't stay young
forever.
