QUESTIONS
Did a certain sports agent set-up a deal
for a prominent skater in which he received
far less money than he already was mak-
ing? Is this the new era of collective
bargaining? Do the agents get more while
top skaters get less?
Is a top South Bay loanshark actually
stalking a certain skater for lack of
payment?
Is a former worker not running around
downtalking his former boss and hinting
at money laundering?
Have THRASHER readers lost their
touch, or was the Mystery Legend photo
puzzle in the May 1988 issue that difficult?
It seems that Derek Saari of Hemming-
ford, Quebec, was the only one who cor-
rectly identified Gator as the mystery
skater. Better luck next time.

was stoked about helping kids with
similar problems. I'm going to start
donating my own money and my own
time to the foundation, they're really
cool people.
So there are ways you can use

besides giving them stickers and
You just did a peculiar demo with autographs?
Tommy Guerrero in front of a rock
crowd at the Bay Area Music
Awards. This rock crowd may know
nothing about skating. How do you
feel about doing something like
that?
That stuff is fun. People get excited
over it because they never get to see
it. Sometimes people react kind of
silly, but that's just the way older
people are, I guess.
You said, coming off the stage, "I
hope skateboarding never comes
to this." What did you mean by
that?
The people were just so weird and
phony. They were just trying to hang
out with rock stars.
What type of music are you listen-
ing to now?
I listen to a lot of music. My favorite
is James Brown. I can listen to James
Brown forever. I listen to-I hate to
call it rap-I've listened to that for a
few years.
Do you think rap will stick around?
Yeah. Because it'll just get better and
better. There are some killer groups
out there.
What are some of your favorite
groups?
I like Eric B and Rakim, Public
Enemy, Run DMC. I hear a lot of good
songs, but I don't know who's sing-
ing them. Natas makes me tapes, but
I usually don't know who the guys
are. Lately, ever since I got back into
skateboarding, I've been listening to
music I used to listen to when I was
a little kid, like Aerosmith, Led Zep-
pelin, Jimi Hendrix. Now in a contest
I play songs that I used play when
I was a little kid.I used to skate and
think about those songs.
Do you have to anything to say
about the magazines' portrayal of
skateboarding?
I think they portray pro skateboarding
too much. People just worry about
what the top pros are doing instead
of the what the average killer
skateboarder back east is doing. I
think they should show good skate-
boarders from all over the world. I get
a lot of coverage, but I know other
guys who should be getting just as
much coverage as me. They're all big
top pros. I think the magazines do a
pretty good job, though.
What are some of your big events?
Two weeks ago, when I was going to
South Carolina, I saw Lance and Neil
in the airport getting ready to go to
Vancouver, and I really wanted to go
with them. Another thing, this demo
in South Carolina was killer. It was
the best one I've ever done. It raised
money for a foundation that helps
kids with learning disabilities. I had
dyslexia, and I had to get a scholar-
Yeah. That's one thing I'd like to see
more of-skateboarding being used
in a more positive way. I think skate-
boarding is a healthy alternative for
kids who might otherwise be getting
in trouble with drugs or gangs.
Skateboarding changes people.
Even though grown-ups think it's bad
or that it's a crime or whatever, I think
skateboarding is totally positive.
Are you a positive person overall?
Not really. I always say I hate stuff.
I am positive in the sense that I don't
hurt other people, or I try not to.
Where do you think skating should
go?
Skateboarding has that punker im-
age still, but it's cleaning up. Not that
there's anything wrong with the punk
image. I just like it as my sport, mine
and my friends. But I guess I like to
expose parents. That's one thing, I've
noticed a lot of parents are getting
behind it. I think it's great when
parents take their kids to contests,
take them skateboarding, provide
them with stuff they need, and go out
and root for them. That's what my
dad did. He used to take me to all the
contests. Even when we were really
poor, my dad would still save up and
buy me a skateboard for my birthday.
I always got a skateboard at
Christmas or on my birthday.
How's life in Venice these days?
It's pretty cool. The skate scene there
is getting a lot stronger. More peo-
ple are getting into skating everyday
and taking it a lot more seriously.
People session more than just the
weekend. It happens every day.
Which is fine for you, since that's
what you do everyday, but some
guys work.
Well, its a new experience for me
because up until recently I was work-
ing full time at restaurants as an
assistant chef. I would only get to
skate on weekends or after 4:00, so
I had to quit working.
How about teammates and some
of the boys around here?
Yeah. Scott Oster and Aaron Murray
are two of the best skaters. Just
having Micke on our team is cool
because he was one of the greatest
skaters who ever lived and still is. It's
cool that all of us are on the same
team together. We've been together
so long we're almost like brothers.
Any favorite spots?
I kind of don't want to mention places
where I live because a lot of kids are
starting to go there. A lot of places
where I used to be the only person
now have full sessions everyday. It
wrecks the whole scene.
What about all the subtle changes
in board design-now blunt nose,
now shark nose, (Continued on page 118)
