Where Do We Draw the Line?
Peaceville Records
The toughest thing this English
band has going for it is the name
Other than that, this is a surprise
of a platter reloased on a punk
label. The music is unliko today's
punk, but the lyrical content is
motivated by political awareness.
The variety of style and approach
in GFDD's all-original material
reflects the three band members
experience as session musicians
and results in sounds that range
from Bowie to Gang of Four ELP
to The Clash with an occasional
avant garde jazz twist. The press
release, which states: "GFDD
parody the pop world for its shallow
messages and musical inefficien
cy.... really seems to hit the nail
on the head. This might be too
severe, however, for those shallow
listeners to whom perhaps Gold
Frankincense and Disk Drive hope
to appeal. PH
VOIVOD
Dimension Hatross
Noise, Lp
It couldn't happen. Last year
when Quebec's techno-metallists
Volvod broke with metal tradition by
releasing "Killing Technology, who
would have thought they could sur
pass it in terms of sheer originali-
ty? Technical ability is the key word
for this crew Metal conventions that
dominated earlier efforts are left in
the dust while a noise-rooted
bludgeon takes over. Vocalist Denis
"Snake" Bellanger's presence
suggests a post-modernist Ozzy
Osbourne; his decrying of the out
of control technocracy clings to
guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'amour's
nearly schizophrenic pace and
tempo. Voivod is an affair of power
and mood; undeniably unique
chord progressions charge
psychotically back and forth across
the relentless, rhythmic din. Voivod
surpass the boundaries of both
punk and metal for an attack that
can only be dubbed "Volvod" rock,

WHITE ZOMBIE
Psycho Blowout
Silent Explosion
White Zombie is about a nasty
and dark side of modern American
life: the low-down, the filthy,
brought up in squalor on junk and
horrifying murder scenes. They are
where Blue Cheer meet the two
Chucks, Manson and Bukowski.
They are adrenalin resulting in a
scream rather than a whimper. The
music itself is basic chest-
thumping power stuff: pound.
pound, pound, power chord, power
chord, power chord. It's what hap
pens on top that's killing, though:
the sound of vocalist Rob Straker
screaming his chilling horror
poetry. Real unquotable here. It's

COLLECTION
So how long has it been? The wait was so long that aven with consis
tent rumors of a relouse you probably thought the band had been com
pletely buried over. In April 1988 Mike Ness and crew returned to the
vinyl outings. After pening the A side with "It's the Law," a re-titled old
song off a Posh Boy release, Social D. work their way through some
ingenious new material, which proves that this L.A. punk outfit has the
creative stamina to endure. In the trua harmonious way of Social D these
melodies have a raw edge while being jammed full of pleasure licks.
The tempo holds the attention whether the song be a balind or a kick-
in-the-crotch driver. This is punk that matured with time and didn't chase
after a trend. Social Distortion accomplish a continuously original and
personal style, as bands like the Damned have done. Mike's pasionato
droning voice delivers some heartfelt lyrics and respectful composure.
Social D. is an excellent band. It always has been and always will be.
They deserve all the glorification they got, for it's not often a band of
this caliber arisos, PH
mesmerizing, though, in the same
way that you might force yourself
to look again at some grisly, vomit
inducing picture you accidentally
saw in a magazine. That right there
is White Zombie's appeal. It's some
scary and disturbing stuff. But
every little kid knows how thrilling
It is to scare yourself and make
yourself uneasy. After all,
everything isn't all peachos and

KINGDOM COME
Kingdom Come
Polygram
There's talk of a Led Zeppelin
revival, bands copping that Zep
style and perhaps entoring into a
market that doesn't really bolong
to them, but more to their childhood
appreciation. How close can you
get without really copying the
originator? Perhaps we should ask
Kingdom Come that question.It is
too evident that vocalist Danny
Stag has trained his voice to match
Robert Plant's. Even though his
singing is excellent, the style isn't
his Listen to "Pushin' Hard" Are
these Plant's croons or what? The
music has roots in Zep and current
metal, with bluesy twangs, but
these Kingdom Come guitarists are
not Jimmy Page, nor do they pull
off an impressive characterization.
Kingdom Come stage it big with
Stag's simulated vocals, and once
they get past the moniker of Led
Zep rip-offs, maybe the true music
will come forth. With this debut.
they are turning heads by mimick-
ing someone else. If you dig Zep,
check out this imitation; it's the best
thing since the invasion of Elvis
clones. MH
MISSION OF BURMA
Compact Disc
Rykodisc
In pre-SS Decontrol days, Mis-
sion of Burma was the band for
those looking for something
pumped up and discordant in the
Boston area. Essentially a
"greatest hits" affair, this compact
disc resurrects some brilliant Bean-
town classics. Original for their day,
MOB borrowed heavily from Wire,
Pere Ubu and classic English punk
bands such as the Buzzcocks and
the Stranglers. After kicking off with
the classic "Academy Fight Song,"
the disc continues with the entire
Signals, Calls and Marches Ep.
selected tracks from the Vs. studio
album and The Horrible Wuth About
Burma live Lp. Roger Miller's shim
mering guitar lines, Clint Conley's
urgent bass work and Peter
Prescott's solid, subdued drum-
ming are all evident here. Two
previously unreleased tracks,
"Forget" and "Laugh the World
Away," round out a nostalgic tribute
to one of Boston's late greats. MG
DIE KRUEZEN
Century Days
Touch and Go
Century Days combines the in-
lensity and moodiness of their first
two Lps with a feeling of Tyler and
Perry shaking hands and trading
secrets with Cave and Eldritch in
some Wisconsin bar, Always form-
conscious, Die Kruezen lighten up
and actually bring a smile to a
listonar's face with the uplifting and
sweet Elizabeth," then counter the
mood with the Foetus-like "Stomp,"
a psychotic carnival romp. Danny
Kubinski's high-pitched, screech-
ing vocals are more expressive and
melody. These boys rarely make it
varied, arriving as an actual
to vinyl, but when they do, it's a
sweet, Halloween-time treat. MG
