FREEDOM OF CHOICE
It seems that parks, sidewalks,
paths, unused basketball courts and
many other areas are open for
anyone to use, unless you're on a
skateboard. I was made aware of this
by my students. (I'm a substitute
school teacher.) They were telling me
that they weren't going to be able to
use the local park because of their
activity, i.e. skating! I told them that
they have as much right to the park
as anyone else.
People need to see that skating is
a sport. It involves a great amount of
balance, coordination and grace, it's
great exercise, and it is something
that can become a permanent part
of your life. For example, I'm 26, mar-
ried, have two kids, teach school, am
a minister at a small church, and I
love to skate. (The classes I teach
really seem to like this about me.)
What I'm getting at is that skating
should be encouraged, not put down.
My 19 month old daughter loves to
ride on my board with me and I
encourage her to do it.
Is there something the skaters can
do to keep their rights to use public
property? Is there an organization
they can join? Or maybe someone
who could write a petition in your
mag that they could copy? "Just say
no" is cool for drugs, but it doesn't
always work when the police are
running you out of the park.

Now there are some golden
rules...Here is a petition that was
sent to us by some skaters with the
same problems. Ted
PETITION FOR RECOGNITION
Discrimination has no place in a
democracy. Whether it is on the
grounds of race, religion, income or
mode of transportation, bigotry is
legally and morally wrong. For an
institution that is representative of the
people to establish a law that dis-
criminates against anyone for any
reason is a crime that defames this
country, its forefathers and its
Constitution.
Skateboarders on the Arizona
State University campus pose no
more threat to the safety of
pedestrians than bicycles, joggers,
maintenance vehicles or wet side-
walks. Since no ban has been
imposed on any of these potential
hazards, it is wrong to outlaw the safe
and responsible riding of skateboards
and rollerskates on the ASU campus.
Indeed, skateboarders are a
minority, as were the pilgrims in their
homelands. With very little voice and
hardly any recognition as equal
citizens in a political sense, the only
way skateboarders can make
themselves heard is to protest. So to-
day we stand together, to be seen
and heard, in the hope of fair and
equal treatment in the name of the
law, for the sake of justice.
We beseech support from all who
can understand that we have done.
no wrong, other than to stand out in
a crowd.

for about nine thousand signatures of
skaters and anyone else who can vote
and present the whole mess to your
town councils and boards of super-
visors next time they pounce on your
freedom. See page 85 for more infor
mation on skaters and the law. T-ed

WHEEL LIFE
Why do manufacturers go out of
their way to make a wheel more
cosmetic? To tell you the truth, I don't
care what the graphics are on my
wheels. What I do know is that they
spend some money on graphics and
their wheels cost more. What an in-
novation! Spend a little and make a
lot off various suckers who like pretty
wheels. Make a real innovation by
removing the graphics and selling a
set of wheels for what they are worth;
ten to twelve bucks.

PS. Your April issue was great. Great,
humorous April Fool articles.
This is America, buddy. Those wheel
makers got a right to put on their
wheels whatever the darn heck they
want and sell 'em to you for whatever
they can get. You're one of the few
who got the jokes in our April Pools
issue. Check out this sampling of
McSqueeb feedback. Ted
