            HEAD TO HEAD HIGHLIGHTS
McGill/Malba
...and McGill with the patented McTwist
right at the buzzer. You gotta give him that
one. Mike's had his share of problems,
though. Earlier he flew right off the side of
the ramp, got a rebate, then fell a couple
times. Here's Micke. He's asked that the
photographers refrain from using their flash
equipment during his runs. Serious
business, Doc, or what?"
"You have to admire the height on those
airs. He's gearing up now, and he's got the
crowd working for him."
"Look at that rock and roll slide transfer
shuffle from the mini ramp. Micke's score of
89.0 beats McGill. What an upset!"
"There's an example of crowd enthusiasm
possibly swaying the judges."
""Well, Micke will take it any way it comes."
Miller/Magnusson
"Chris with a nice alley-oop, the best in
the business, and into the mini ramp with a
backside lipslide, now a frontside rock and
roll boardslide back into the half-pipe, makes
the gay twist, and beautiful frontside ollie to
boardslide, fastplant to fakie. Almost lost it
there. Fakie air to boardslam...the crowd
loves it."
"That was a ripping run."
"Now the pressure's on Magnusson. He's
pumping, takes his back foot off on a high
backside and goes into backside 360° air
varial. Tony makes extremely difficult tricks
look easy. Maybe he's finally getting his due
from the judges. He edged out Miller on that
round."
Hosol/Hawk
"Here's, perhaps, a preview of the final
match-up later on. Christian launches over
the wall into the mini-ramp and races back
into the half-pipe for a big air, into a bigger
rocket air and a McTwist with great height.
91.6"
"The clock was malfunctioning during the
first part of Hawk's run. There's the 360° air
pogo transfer into the mini-ramp. How's that
for difficulty?"
"Nice, and look at that frontside air to
nosepick at speed. This is a long run. That
timer malfunction might have caused Tony
to lose his timing. And right there Hawk falls.
We'll have to see how the judges react."
"Waiting for Tony's score. 89.6. That's not
going to do it. Hosoi advances but Hawk will
come back."
Malba/Magnusson
"The winner here advances to meet Hawk
in the next round while the loser ends up in
fourth place."
"Look at Tony Magnusson. He did the gay
twist into a Mctwist into a unit. How can you
top that?
"That's your extreme degree of difficulty
right there. At 91.3, it's going to be tough for
Micke to beat that run."
"Here's Micke with the backside 'around
the world. He takes his front foot off and
throws it around the nose of the board while
switching from one hand to the other and
back again. He's throwing a big method, big
60
one-footed back-to-back airs. Alley oop
across the ramp, transfers a hand 'n roll into
the shallow end and reverts it through the
flat bottom. Comes back for the rock 'n roll
shuffle to the big ramp, gets a good layback
to finish it off. Black?"
"That was an excellent run for Micke,
smooth, consistent, and mixed with a lot of
speed. I still think that the run by Magnusson
will be tough to beat."
"Well, there it is, 90.3, not good enough.
Micke's gotta be happy with fourth, though."
Magnusson/Hawk
Christian hasn't lost a bout yet, so he'll sit
out while the two Tony's battle and then take
on the winner. First they're going to interview
the skaters again before their runs. This is
about the fourth time. Rick, don't you think
that gets bothersome during a pressure
situation like this?"
"Damn right. If I was up there, I'd trip the
sucker right off the back of the ramp."
"Okay, here's Magnusson. Long 50/50
grind. Pumps some airs, grabs the tail,
backside varial. Flapped over invert to lien
to tail to lien. 50/50 grind on the mini-ramp,
the 360° varial and finishes with an alley oop
McTwist. Yes."
"Well, Kev, Mag's another skater who
doesn't fall often, and that's what counts here
today. And it's a 92.00. Hawk's pressured
here."
"Okay, Tony drops in and smacks the
McTwist immediately, landing high up on the
wall. Fastplant to fakie, the 180° pogo rock
'n roll to the mini-ramp, sad plant on the small
wall, rushes the face wall of the deep end
for a nosepick, body jar, one-footed varial
aerial, invert varial, reverse gay twist and he
may have the Magnet here.".
"Yes, Tony did everything he's been do-
ing, only higher. And the 92.6 will put him in
the final head to head with Hosoi."
Hosoi/Hawk II
"Rick, I don't know why Hosoi's skating
first here. He has the advantage. Hawk will
have to beat Christ twice to win this contest.
Maybe they're giving Tony a rest? Christian.
drops in and pumps. Look at that giant,
kicked-out 'rocket-walk.' Christian's airs look
higher than we've seen all day, but he seem-
ed a little sketchy on that run. That 92.0 is
the highest for Hosoi all day, though."
"Now, Tony's got to stay on. And again
right into the McTwist. Pretty much the same
run for Tony. He's not going get a 720° out
of this one. Wait, yes, he is going to get the
720° and they'll count it, after the clock ran
out. Rick, do you give it to him or not?"
"You've got to. Listen to this crowd.
They're going nuts. Look at those tits shake,
that is a fine set. And final score for Tony
Hawk, 93.0. One more round. This is it, for
all the marbles."
"You know, Rick, the booing for Christian
is getting to be kind of a fun thing here. don't
you think?"
"It's getting ugly."
"Look at that rocket-walk, 'Christ-air, and
there's an Indy air unlike I've ever seen. The
method air transfer into the mini-ramp, back
to the half-pipe, long slide 'n roll. He needs
something here. There's the high McTwist,
good, and a body jar. Solid run and a solid
93.0. Hawk can't miss to beat that run."
"Now here's Hawk. A fall would be deadly
here. Again, the McTwist right off. He's not
pulling anything off way above the coping."
"Oh, but look at that invert transfer into the
shallow end."
"You gotta love that. Meanwhile his time
is running out and again here's the 720%, but
with time expired."
"One hella run, though. All we can do is
wait now. It seems to be taking a long time."
Well, to make a long story even longer,
Tony's score of 93.0 tied Christian's. Frank
Hawk stuck to his rule book and added up
all the judges' scores, including the high and
low. The totals: Tony Hawk-455, Christian
Hosol-456. It was Christian's day for victory
this time.
