NATAS
(From page 69)
There's been a bit of a controversy
regarding your name. Some say that since
Natas spelled backwards is satan you're
into devil worshipping. Is there any truth
to these allegations?
No, and I hope this will stop a lot of stupid
things. Natas is the name my parents gave
me at birth. They thought I was going to be
a girl and were going to name me Natasha.
Then, when they found out I was a boy and
wanted a more masculine name that still had
a Lituanian sound, they took the "h-a" off
of Natasha and left it Natas. And that's it.
People don't even ask me about my name.
They just go, "Oh, he worships the Devil."
And they don't even say it to me most of the
time, they say it to other people. It's like call-
ing me stupid. People believe the most ab-
surd things-like worshipping the Devil.
There's no reason to worship the devil. It's
not that hard to get your soul damned for eter-
nity. I take it as an insult.
Does it make you think less about the
media thing?
Yeah it does. There was a letter in Thrasher
about it. They printed it but they didn't set
everyone straight by telling them, "No he
doesn't worship the devil. And his last name
doesn't mean anything backwards." They
just said, "Blay, ylay, ylah." And that just
made the controversy grow. It made more
people aware of it and they just assumed.
more from it. For me it just creates problems.
Are you religious?
Semi-religious, because my parents are, but
I don't go to church.
How do you feel about the average skater,
who reads all the mags and watches all
the videos?
The ones who are most verbal, the ones I
encounter the most, it seems, are the ones
who assume everything. They think they
know everything about every pro skater
because they read the magazines. This is
untrue. They just see pictures of them.
Is that the mag's fault?
No, the magazines just put out pictures and
the kids take too much from the pictures. One
thing is the emphasis on contests and the
kid could read the magazines, see the videos
or whatever and they see the skater in a
pressure situation, he has one minute to
skateboard, the guy chokes or whatever.
Some kids take the whole thing wrong.
They're not having fun when they skate. They
just read the magazine and try to do this trick
or that trick. Try to get a glimpse of this pro
or that, try to get his autograph. They're
wasting their time thinking about all these
things.
Do you feel that skateboarding magazines
are doing the right thing for skating today?
No. They're glorifying the pros they like. It
suggests too much for the kids. Thrasher
magazine is the bible for some kids. It's what
they base their ideas of skateboarding
around. They believe every word. If you say
one guy is the best, then he's the best to all
these kids. I had a kid call me up and tell me
to learn another trick besides an ollie..
Because that's the only picture I get in the
magazine. But I do so many other tricks.
Have you ever been injured seriously.
I never broke any bones (knocks on table).
But I strained all the ligaments and tendons
in my ankle and I didn't skate for a summer.
Every once in awhile my back hurts really
bad, but not lately. I think it's just muscle stuff.
What do you think of skate camps?
They're good because all you do is skate and
never think of anything else. The food is bad,
there are no girls there, and you can go to
sleep and never have to worry about what
you're doing the next day because you know
you're spending the whole time skating. You
have no choice but to get better if you just
skate all day long.
Do you ride half-pipes?
Yeah, whenever I get the chance. "I am a
streetstyler. I only ride PVC curbs and jump
ramps." (laughs)
What about mini-ramps?
There was a little ramp at a camp last sum-
mer. That goes back to my most serious
injury. Little ramps are no good for knee-
slides. I was skating a big ramp and I went
to the little ramp and was there until 10 p.m.
It was getting dark, I was getting tired and
I got sloppy. I hung up, went straight to the
flat bottom and tried to kneeslide. I went
straight down and bent my ankle all the way
back. It hurt really bad. But, other than that,
mini-ramps are good.
What do you think is in the future of
skateboarding?
People will be happy with it for a while longer.
People will be throwing money all around.
There will be a couple more terrible TV.
shows about it, a couple more really bad
movies. They'll try to exploit it some more.
Then the public will get bored and lose.
interest, and the rest of us will just continue
skateboarding. Thrasher won't get any more.
complaints about offending this or that. It will
be back to the nice little group of skaters.
We'll be able to skate Venice High all by
ourselves. We'll be able to skate without
worrying about crowds. That's just my
opinion. It really doesn't matter, though,
because I'll skate no matter what happens.
Is there a rivalry between the Venice
Beach/Santa Monica scene?
Not for me. The two towns are different, so
you can't compare them. There's more of a
scene in Venice. There's usually a jump ramp
at the pavilion. All the kids catch the bus
there and hope they'll see Christian Hosoi.
He shows up every once in awhile. Everyone.
hangs out and goes, "I'm better than you.
I'm better than you. I did this yesterday. I did
that yesterday." And they talk and they talk
and they talk. I really get tired of the talking.
Let's touch on this streetplant deal. Can
you do ho-hos?
I've done one. I don't do them anymore. The
only thing I got out of that was dirty hands.
I washed them very well after that.
