School's out! Or will be out soon enough for
three glorious months of lazy summer sun and
fun. Students will vacate the classrooms and
close their school books. Teachers will pass or
fail these students and then close their rule
books. These institutions of learning will
become barren, save for the slap of a janitor's
mop or the occasional pick up ball game. For
most, the summer break means a welcome
respite from the horrors of an early morning
alarm clock that jolts one to the realities of
unfinished homework and another long
day of bells and dizzy spells.
For some, with more free time on
their hands than they can handle,
empty schoolyards remain a
habitual gathering spot
where one may be drawn
while wandering aimlessly.
Maybe you'll run into that
guy or girl that you wish
you'd hit on at the last
chance dance in June. Or may-
be shoot a few buckets with the
boys. Or just hang, and cop a smoke in
an open space, away from the everyday
suburban and urban enclosures that keep
one cooped up.
For certain four-wheel drifters the deserted
asphalt playgrounds and slick hallways of the
local schoolyard have a different draw.
Suddenly a vast skateable terrain, which
was inaccessible for the past nine
months (save for a
Skoolyardblures
board
stash in the
locker), is laid
bare. No more
pencils, no more
books, no more teachers'
dirty looks. Red curbs and hand rails,
stairs and benches, and, if you're lucky,
a bank of potential await your assault. Ready
for a slap of the rail or an ollie to tail. Unlimited
terrain waiting for a skate. And you know after
fall's call, it just may be too late.
