supreme in the "drawing-impaired" department. By sheer chance,
he and #43 do manage to win a game. Ripstop runs howling into
the night in heathen jubilation.
"It just proves one thing," says #11%. "I intimidate him."
Those who enter room #227 proclaim it the coldest room in the
building.
"The heater must still be warming up," #11% explains.
Cold snores.
Sunshine in a beautiful blue sky graced the mountain on Sun-
day. The freestyle halfpipe event is scheduled for this day.
Ábout a hundred-yard portion of the slalom course is used as
the halfpipe. In this event, the riders do their best to maneuver
down the course, catching big air over hips, lip sliding, flying
helicopters and rocket airs, and slicing backside methods. One com-
petitor rides into some trees and begins to lose speed. He grabs
a sapling, flips himself over it, putting him in a good position to
resume his run down the rest of the course.
At times, a rider may fly uncontrollably into whatever sort of
spectator might be observing. The outcome of this sort of incident
can get pretty messy. By the time #43 and #11% arrive at the contest
site, two such mishaps have occurred. One spectator was injured,
losing a large portion of his scalp to the metal-edged snowboard.
Each contestant gets two runs, which are judged and scored. Both
runs are tallied and the guy with the highest score wins. Absent
from the weekend's competition are a few of snowboardings ultra-
heavyweights, like Terry Kidwell, Shaun Palmer, Ken Achenbach and
Bert Lamar.
The sun moves across the sky, and eventually positions itself in
a manner so as to place the competition area in the shade. The
temperature in the shade is numbing. Shivering uncontrollably
becomes commonplace.
The results are tallied and Craig Kelly, again, is the winner of the
pro men's freestyle halfpipe. The amateur men's division is won
by Chris Klug and the women's division is won by Suzi Riggins.
"How many rolls of film did you shoot?" #11% asks #43.
"Almost five. You?"
"Four. That makes almost nine rolls total. Plenty. That's four times
the amount I shot last year."
