LOOSE NUTS
THE DOCTOR
My name is Paul and I have two brothers.
One is nineteen and is an L.A. Raiders' fan.
The eldest is twenty-two and is, at present,
in Durham jail for rape, larceny and
attempted murder. I think my parents are
very much in love, although my father is, at
present, on remand in Armley jail for inter-
fering with the little girl next door. My mother
is too scared to sleep by herself while dad
is away, so she sleeps with the man next
door. I have recently met a very nice girl
whom I love very much. She is an ex-
prostitute with three illegitimate children. I
want very much to marry this girl, Doc, but
my problem is this: Should I tell her my tail's
delamned?
Paul "No Nickname" Biggin

Well, I'll tell ya, sounds like you're a
perfectly well adjusted kind of kid so I'm
not going to try and change anything.
Anyway, if you want to keep things in your
family rolling as smooth as they are now,
I wouldn't suggest you tell them about
your you-know-what. But if you really love
this girl, eventually she must know. Just
be aware that it might send her off the
deep end, considering the sheltered life
she's had. This is a matter which should
not be taken lightly. There is a chance it
can be rectified, though, before it causes
an uproar which would surely tear apart
the family unit. There are some things
you can do but they should be done
together with counseling. If it doesn't
look like she can handle the "rebuilding"
process, I'm afraid you'll have to buy a
new deck. I'm sorry.
I SCREAM CONE
Dude, be serious with me. In five months
I've already gone through a set of 92A Slime
Balls and Powell Freestyles because they
coned. I'm getting sick of it. Do you think
it's the way I skate or what? My cousin has
had his Rat Bones for over a year and they
just started to cone. That's a long time. Do
you have any suggestions?

First, look at how you've been skating
lately. Decide if it's been with any
unusual reckless abandon or just the
regular thrashing. Then, if you have been

in a hick town, and there's no one better to
learn from. How do you do non-stop 360's?
Terry Carpenter
Pinckney, MI
Well, quarter-inch shop ply is fine,
masonite is better but expensive and
somewhat delicate. Yes, you want the ply
to rest on some kind of support. Yes, we'll
try and have some simpler how to's.
Nonstop 360°'s? Practice, lots of it.
BRITTLE BONES
I am thirteen years old and I continue to
break bones. I have been skating for five
years and since I've started I've had three
broken wrists, a compound collar bone frac-
ture and a broken finger. I've also done
some serious ankle jobs. I skate for five
hours a day and I keep slamming. What's
skating real hard lately, your question is
answered. Either your friend doesn't
skate or he has some miracle wheels. Of
course, your skating style is a factor.
When isn't it? Are your wheels coning on
the same side? Maybe you should try to
slide backside as well as frontside. If
you're just a harsh dude, try rotating your the deal, Doc?
wheels so the coning will counteract
itself. Freestyle wheels and many newer
wheels these days are narrower and
taller, with less surface area. This could
be a factor. Then again, maybe you just
ride rougher pavement than your buddy
does.

Whoa! Enough's enough, dude. What the
hell are you doing? I don't know about
you, but I don't like broken bones,
especially when they're mine. To really
analyze what you're doing wrong I'd have
to watch you skate. You're either one
outrageous thrasher or real dumb. First
thing I'd do is mellow out, slow down and
either learn or die. Try to do things
differently. You might want to take up
lawn bowling.
BEGGARS CAN'T BE CHOOSERS
In September, 1985, I started skating and
my parents bought me a goofy Nash board.
Sol thrashed it. I ask my mom for a Psycho-
stik and she promised I would get it for
X-mas so I waited and waited til X-mas
passed. Then I was so pissed. After a few IF THE SKATE FITS...
months I bugged and begged 'em for two
months and still zip. All my friends called
me a wanna-be and still do. Can you either
kill my parents, talk to them, or give me
some advice? Please help me; you're my
only hope. I have nobody else to turn to.
Also, can I have a t-shirt?

I'm a fifteen-year-old girl and I've wanted
to start skating for almost two years. My
family was against it and wouldn't buy me
I never really had one. I'm now buying a JFA
a board. I always scrounged off friends, but
10"x30". My friends say I should get a big
deck like, 11"x32", because I'm starting out.
Should I? They also say I should get 170's
instead of 160's. Are ultralight wheels good
Killing seems a bit extreme. Obviously, for street skating? How about it?
you're asking for a little too much (even
though they've broken a promise). Shine
'em, dude. You want a new skate? Earn
some money and buy one. Don't be a
wimp. Two years go by and you can't even
buy a stick! Come on. And on top of that,
whining you want an Ask the Doctor
T-shirt. Surely you jest.
AWW SHEET!
I have a small half in my yard which I'm
going to re-sheet next spring and I have
some questions. 1) What kind of wood is
best? 2) I only have one layer of half-inch
ply right now, would just one more quarter-
inch ply be enough (there are just a couple
of us who skate it, and I don't want to spend
mega-bucks)? 3) When re-plying do the
edges of the wood have to be right on the
2x6? Also, could you tell whoever does the
Step by Step to show some easier tricks (ie.
backside ollies, lip tricks, etc.) because I live

No way. If you're a new skater and not
very big or heavy, don't get a big board.
Learn to skate on a regular (or mini if
you're petite), then graduate to a larger
unit when you are ready. A big board and
170 trucks would be too big for you. Your
board should be a nimble extension of
you, not a workout to kickturn. The
problem with ultralights on the street is
that they'll wear out faster.
