Madrid has gone through some
good times and some bad times. It
wasn't long ago that three of their
major pro riders defected to other
teams. The reasons are unclear to
deem rideable. Write to: Madrid

When you talk about quality, even-
tually the name Schmitt Stix will
come up. It is quality, as well as func-
skater, one board for all types of
riding: vert, street, everywhere. I think
it has always been the desire of skate
companies to divide skating so you
think you have to buy two boards, one
for street and one for vert. There is
no reason why a company can't
design one board that is comfortable
for every kind of riding. The Danger
is proof of the fact. It measures in at
30" long, 10" wide, with 3½" of nose
and a 6½" tail. This is the deck for

me, but the lack of pro riders certainly
must have made sales drop. Anyway,
they've pulled it together with some
new riders and seem to be on their
way back.
Madrid decks have always been
known for their extreme concave and
light functional shapes, but lately the
wood seems to be of lesser quality
than the first decks they made. Their
new line consists of the new, large
Gary Sanderson and the Micro
series: the Elguera, Smith and Nieder
These boards are very different from
the previous Madrid board series-
they have more nose, double-kick
tails and no wheel wells.
It makes sense to make smaller,
Micro series decks for kids. These
decks have good designs and con-
tours but bad Xerox graphics. The
Elguera Micro is 29" long, 9¾" wide,
has 3" of nose and a 6%" tail. The
Nieder is 29" long, 9%" wide, has
3% of nose and a 6% tail. These
micro decks all look similar; they
have the same concave (through the
nose), size and shape.
The only large deck we got from
Madrid was the Gary Sanderson
"Ant" model. While the Micros have
sharply angled concaves, this
Sanderson has noticeably less. The
Sanderson is 30%" long, and 9%"
wide. A press release that came with
the boards says these Micro decks
are designed for "vert," but I don't
think there any laws against riding
them on whatever surface you

tion and design, that put Schmitt on
the top of the skateboard heap. The
new Schmitt Stix Danger board is
definitely designed for the new-style

Walker sent us three new decks
that have been redesigned and
shaped. As with the Madrid boards
earlier, these decks have tri-tails,
more nose than previously released
Walker boards, and no wheel wells.
The Rude Boy/Chris Baucom is 30%"
by 10%". The Exterminator V, with
good graphics and smooth lines, is
30% long and 10" wide, and lastly,
the most comfortable, smoothest
board, is the Reggie Barnes street
skate measuring 30" long and 9.65"
wide. Check 'em out by writing to

Ave., Cocoa Beach, FL 32931.
Herb Neumann, of Skate Werks
has been sending in plastic acces
sories for a long time, and they
always seem to get nudged out of the
column every month. Over a year
ago he sent in some custom riser
pads whose design preceeds the
board-saving riser of recent populari-
ty. Skate Werks products are made
of more resilient plastic than other
popular risers and have a pyramid
shape which spreads weight more
evenly. Their newest line is even
better than last year's line. The 14"
riser pad has been drilled out dif-
ferently and is better looking than
earlier models. Skate Werks, 89

And from the New Ideas File
comes Extended Grinds, a new-style,
high-carbon steel strip that is custom
tooled into a groove routed out of the
grinding surface of your truck hangar.
The super hard steel used in this pro-
cess was originally developed to be
used as a snowmobile skeg and pro-
mises to offer a more ideal, longer
wearing surface than conventional
copers. This device is an after-market
accessory that involves sending your
trucks in to be custom machined, so
don't plan on "buy today, skate to-
day. No word yet as to how this
device will affect existing truck war-
ranties, but for complete information
write to: Extended Grinds, 202 Salem
Street, Rockton, IL 61072.
