            HELLS KITCHEN
Hell's Kitchen formed in the summer of 1987
when bassist Troy Takaki, guitarist Luke Skeels
and drummer Chris Kontos (ex of Attitude Adjust-
ment) quit The Boneless Ones en masse and
joined forces with guitarist Tom Flynn (ex of Fang)
and vocalist Dave Chavez (bass player for Verbal
Abuse). As befits a band of musical experts and
seasoned professionals, the sound they create is
awe-inspiring: bone splintering, flesh frying, white
knuckling, pus splattering, muscle ripping, fester-
ing pulses of mind numbing and intense country
core (or something like that).
TOKEN ENTRY
Originally known as Gilligan's Revenge, Token Entry is rapidly
becoming one of the top players of the New York hardcore scene.
Their debut album, "From Beneath the Streets" (Positive Force) is
a departure from standard Big Apple hard/fast fare. Vocal melodies.
and metal-laced delivery emerge as important components to the
band's driving attack.
Though coming from a positive, straight-thinking territory. Token
Entry doesn't necessarily demand a straight-edge cool.
Between Ernie and Mick, numerous skating injuries can be
recounted. Both Johnny and Tim have been skating for over six years.
Tim bears the Jak's banner. "Jak's isn't really a team." reveals Tim..
"It's more of a title. Dave Chavez from Verbal Abuse turned me on
to them. It's more of a West Coast group, especially San Francisco,
but we're going to start a New York division. Girls fall all over them."
UNGH
The band members are Johnny Machine, Steve Dread Snyder, Ben Stoken' Stokes, Carl Maysack and Eric Z. They
switch instruments around to keep the sound fresh and in your face. UNGH! is based in Chicago and does a kind of funk
industrial thrash mash. The crew wails on rhythmic smash and grind with nasty percussion, noisy guitar and sampled
machinery grinds for syncopated chaos. Steve and Johnny are both sponsored skaters. The band has been playing
since about 1984, and the members have their sights set on releasing a full length Lp sometime in the near future.
ODD MAN OUT
KEYN THATCHE
MERAD
We've featured skater/rocker Chuck Treece on these
pages several times over the years. Whether he bel
McShreddin' or getting McRad, Chuck's added a lot to the
skate music scene with his varied talents. While he still
throws a mean layback on Tom Groholski's backyard ramp,
Chuck also street sessions with anyone who's game. The
latest incarnation of the McRad theory has just cut an album
with the current line-up: Chuck on guitar; John Wagner,
drums; Rob D. Joseph, bass; and Ethan Jarvis, vocals.
Recent shows with Agnostic Front and Suicidal Tendencies
in the Philly/Jersey area have brought a good skater turnout
along with spontaneous street sessions before and after
sound checks. During a recent Halloween street contest on
the waterfront in downtown Pittsburgh, PA, McRad provided
a live soundtrack during the contest runs. Chuck says he'd
like to do similar shows in the future.
As a skater, Steve Caballero
needs no introduction, he's travel-
led the world plying his ply on ply.
As a musician he's done almost as
well, banging bass and gouging.
guitar. His first band, the Faction,
ground out two successful skating
and rocking tours of the U.S. Now,
his new unit, Odd Man Out,
features long-time skate pard' Ray
Stevens on bass, Marc Gonzalez
on drums (no, not Mark Gonzales),
Karen Heimgartner on keyboards
and singer guy Christopher J.
Kisper. Their new self-titled debut
Lp (on Beware) will be out before
you finish reading this.
