(From page 63) often incompatible rivals. The
irony of a major skateboard contest at this
particular place may have been lost on more
than a few people, but the implications could
not be denied. Skating can and will adapt to
any environment.
Saturday morning dawned hot and clear
for the beginning of the end. A crowd of 400
had arrived to spectate the latest spectacle.
They were not going to leave disappointed.
The amateur freestyle temporarily pre-
empted the main event. Being the only
scheduled freestyle event of the season, all
of the top amateurs turned out despite the
fact that they had to take second billing. The
amateurs ripped it up. Jim Morris, Lynn
Cooper, Joe Humeris, Cameron Marten, Bill
Robertson and Sean Coons, among others
all raged hard. Morris, Cooper and Humuris
took the top three spots respectively.
The pre-contest skate jam was a typical ex-
hibit of skate anarchy at its best, or worst,
depending on what side of the rule book.
you're on. The initial twenty-five entrants, the
only ones who were supposed to be skating.
were instantly joined by at least forty others,
as one more rule was overthrown. The action
raged at a furious pace as everyone tried to
get back in synch after waiting for two hours.
to skate. The crowd began to roar in obvious
approval as one insane move followed
another at every point in the course. Par-
ticularly amusing was the fact that some of
these so-called "avant garde" moves,
