NEVADA HALF-PIPE COMP.
Our contest was called, "Excell Skates Nevada State Fair Half-
Pipe Invitational for Factory Sponsored Ams and Locals 1987." This
was the first half-pipe contest held at the Nevada State Fair. We had
up to 5,000 people watching during the heated sessions.

NORTH-CENTRAL RAMP FINALS good measure
by Mike Timble
Dressed in the typical khaki-cloth
uniform, the gawky Rent-a-Cop whin
ed over the PA, "You know skate
boarding here is a privilege." The
skaters at the Kirkwood Community
Center, home of the Midwest SKB
Camp in St. Louis, MO, snickered in
disbelief. The wannabe cop con
tinued, "We really don't appreciate
you littering the area...you really
take this place for granted."
The skaters were in town for the
NSA sanctioned North-Central
Amateur Ramp qualification contest
which was to take place Saturday,
July 11. Taken for granted? No ap
preciated?! They were the ones not
being appreciated. They were some
of the best amateur ramp skaters
from the Midwest. They came to try
and qualify for the Central Regionals
in Austin, Texas, on December 12.
There were three qualification
heats of about ten skaters. Each
skater got three practice runs and two
scored runs. Fifteen of the thirty.
skaters would qualify for the Central
Regional championships with two
others as runner-ups.
Each set of runs went quickly and
before long the cuts were made. The
top five scorers automatically
qualified for the final jam and the
others battled for the remaining five
spots in the final jam.
Wisconsin's Randy Kelliher skated
consistently and with a nice enough
array of tricks like sweepers, fast
plants, lien-to-tails and inverts to land
him in tenth place.
Tory Boettcher seemed to have
problems adjusting to the big transi-
tions and ultra-slick masonite sur-
face, but he stayed on and skated
hard, earning him ninth place. Tory
hit the standard tricks like solid airs,
long grinds, slides, rock and rolls and
hip-hops (over the channel). He also
included some pretty bizarre but im-
pressive moves like backside airs into
the channel then rolling back in,
nosepick drop-ins and acid drops. He
stopped the show with a leap up to
the 4'6" high railing and a bomb drop
onto the ramp on his last run.
Everyone jumped to their feet when
he made it.
Mike Renfro snagged eighth place
with consistent, no-bail runs that in-
cluded tricks like lien-to-tails, long
grinds and nosepick grinds.
In Minneapolis they call Greg
Bahn "The Machine" Today he was
human and just couldn't stay on long
enough to perform the way he
usually does. Bahn is definitely one
of the hottest skaters without spon-
sorship. Just look at his repertoire of
massive cess slides, wicked tuck-
knee inverts, Gray slides, rails slides,
thrusters, big air and even a Miller
Virginia Beach boy John Fudala
liened into fourth with lots of air, body
jars, Miller flips and grinds.
Mouse, alias Thomas Tyler, is a
very aggressive skater. The judges
liked this and gave him third for his
Madonnas, lien-to-tails, tail slides
and fastplants.
