group of ladies is
responsible for the
coolest cuts atop
some of the coolest
heads in Santa
Monica, CA, They are
the A.S.H. Sculptet-
tes, and we have
reports that these girls
(Debi, Deb, Dee Dee
and Frankie) are put-
ting in long hours of
painstaking singing practice in an exclusive beach-side recording studio.
The final result can be heard on the upcoming Skate Master Tate release,
which features the Sculptettes on background vocals. Helping out in the
studio is none other than Tony Cahill of Tupelo Chain Sex/Seima Records
fame and Glenn M. Feit, Sr. of Powercord Productions (producer of Motley
Crue's first record). The SMT record is just one of several on the new Beware
label-other signees include the Drunk Injuns and McRad. As for Tupelo
Chain Sex, keep a peep open for a new release on a major label. (About
time, eh?). The Brigade is curently looking for another guitarist to add
to an already full sound. They're releasing a single from an upcoming LP
that should be out soon. If ya need a gig, contact the boys from BYO Also
new(s) from Santa Monica is an outfit called the Black YaYas, and they're
in the studio with a soon-to-be-released four-song EP entitled "Downed."
Singer Hector Ortega is an Argentinian madman. Also in the oven is Crux
Ansata of Venice, CA, whose five-song demo has been circulating local tape
decks. This stuff is speed metal at its finest, though not fastest
Coming
out of Austin, TX, are some fresh homegirls with a catchy name...The Tuna
Crew (How fresh can you get?)...Around the holidays, wait patiently for
a first release by DrewBrick Squeeb, a power trio from the beach-hardcore-
surf-tunes-in-a-bar-b-que style. How about those Lakers? Yeah! Well, how
about those Screamin' Sirens? They've just completed work on The Run-
ning Kind, a movie about an all-girl band and stuff. Max Tash directs (Cheers,
WKRP Cincinatti, Easy St., Frank's Place), Modi Frank and Harry Knapp
producing. Look for an early 1988 release. The Sirens also have a new guitarist,
Kathryn Grimm. And you wonder what's up with x-guit girl Rosie Flores?
She's got a new album out on Warner/Reprise. Good stuff, Vern! Especially
if ya like country twang The Little Kings are featured on a Stiv Bators
12 disc covering an old Sonics tune "Have Love Will Travel." It's got Stiv
on vocals and the LK's backing. Quite a combo... As you may already
know, the Bonedaddy's, featuring King Cotton and Mike Tempo, just cut
some tracks and had longtime friend Bo Diddley sit in on one tune. Although
many (like the Rolling Stones), have tried to corral him, this is the first time
Bo has acquiesed to playing on someone else's album....From the silver
screen we hear that Dudes should be out soon. With Penelope Spheeris
(of Decline of Western Civilization and Suburbia fame) in the director's chair
this should prove to be another cult classic. Also, keep yer ears clean for
a Dudes soundtrack by Steve Val, a serious soundtrack for a serious
dude! S.M.'s underground punx No Reaction played to a packed court-
yard at Moise's with Salvy of No Mercy slamming the skins, while Smitty.
the lead singer, slammed the crowd. And, to destroy all rumours, Anthony
is still rockin' with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Out by now on EMI/Manhat
tan is a new album called-ready for this?-The Uplift Mofo Party Plan. A
video featuring the song "Fight like a Brave" should be out by now, 100.
A must for the connoisseur of cool....Many bands are being signed in L.A.
San Francisco's Jet Boy penned a contract with Elektra. Former Hanoi Rocks
bassist Sami Yaffa has joined them and the band is currently recording their
debut Lp. A most promising band that still isn't signed is the Damn Yankees.
If you get a chance to see 'em do (Cheap Trick of the 90's). The Insultors,
of Arcadia, have moved from backyard parties to big-time Fender's, of Long
Beach, with Jeff Grosso as one of three lead vocalists.
ELSEWHERE New York City was the place to be when everyone got
together for the eighth annual New Music Seminarin July. There were shows
everywhere. Especially cool a the heavy metal showcase at The Ritz with
Death Angel, Wargasm, VoiVod and Exodus. Destruction were scheduled
to play as well, but couldn't get visas to enter the country. Combat Records
is starting work on The Ultimate Revenge Part II, which will be a full-length,
feature video concert highlighting three of Combat's most popular acts: Exodus,
Nuclear Assualt and Heathen...Suicidal Tendencles have finished a tour
in Europe with dates in the U.K., Holland, Germany and Belgium. Look for
US. dates right around now! Caroline Records has taken over manufac-
turing and distribution for the Suicidal Records label. Releases include the
Welcome to Venice compilation, Beowulf, No Mercy and Excel...Check
out A Texas Trip compilation which was compiled, produced and recorded
by the Butthole Surfers (who are featured on two tracks). It also contains
two tracks each from Stickmen with Rayguns, Daniel Johnston and a track
from Fitch. Adios amigos.
