THRASHER
The
FALL
While new skate venues turn up, old ones are
sacrificed at a pretty fair exchange rate. Even after
the glorious days of the skate parks when those
playpens were being ripped up, skate activity in
the immediate area surrounding a dozed park
increased the day after.
Sure the park scene was nice and easy, and
had smooth, pool-like bowls and carvable lines
a-plenty. But those days are gone. It feels good
to get out from behind the fence and explore.
A lot of people probably thought Del Mar would
always be there, now it's history. Now we skate
for free.
Although the skating continued right up to dozer
time, the last paying session at Del Mar Skateranch
was on 6/26/87. Local, Buddy Carr, drags one final
layback across soon-to-be-forgotten coping in the
kidney pool. Photo: Mark Waters, Insets: The last
ride down the banked slalom run was a slow roll by
this huge backhoe. When it was all over, nobody
could dispute the final results: Backhoe-won,
Skaters-none. Photo: Chip Morton. A pause for
reflection and a souvenir. Photo: Dave Sturt.
