Rookie of the hour Mike Vallely was smiley while accepting cash for his first
professional outing.
leaving less time for kids to mill around asking for stickers and
autographs. The evening culminated into a rager at the Thunder-
bird Motor Lodge in the Grigley/Lucero suite. The highlight of the
event was 45 people crowded around one set to watch the 11:00
news. A good two minutes was devoted to the contest. Ken's Miller
flip, a Natas wall ride and a Jesse slam were featured in a parting
shot.
Describing a streetstyle contest must be almost as hard as
judging one. The constantly changing terrain, mixed with moves
stolen from all other aspects of skateboarding (freestyle, vertical,
etc.), make it hard to fully understand or appreciate the riders"
performances. Holding his second place trophy Natas said, "I
guess judges don't notice when you ride switch-stance." He was
right; no doubt the judges didn't even blink when he switched
his feet during runs. They were too busy trying to keep up with
his wild skating. To be fair, judging streetstyle seems impossible.
There are too many uncontrolled variables like degree of difficul-
ty, use of terrain, etc. Streetstyle contests wind up being more
like carnival sideshows than contests, complete with freaks,
barkers, acrobats and clowns. All that was missing at the
Willamette Dammit was the big top, which might have come in
handy that day had the skate gods not been so kind.
