Hard working Mike McGill negotiates a slide 'n' roll from high to low
on an unusual new ramp design at St. Louis
(Continued from page 73) When Tony dropped in he pulled out
all the stops. He stayed on top of all his mind blowing tricks:
long nose picker grinds, McTwists, ollie to tails, scissor kick.
fakies, Japan airs, and maydays (back axle stalls to fakie).
He was on fire. Finally, worn out from his long, last run,
Hawk lapped over the coping to do a rock and roll and stalled
there for several seconds. He looked up at the skaters on
the deck, took a breath, fakied back in and hit a perfect
720°. The crowd thundered it's approval. Tony stalled once
more, dropped back in and launched into a flip dismount,
landing on his feet on the roll-out deck.
Apprehension was high and the pressure was on Christian
when he came to the edge of the deck. The crowd was
expecting his best run of the day. And why not? Hosoi had
been high in the air all day with his sick methods, airwalks,
method fakies, Madonnas, layback inverts and McTwists. He
rolled in and nailed a huge method, a lein and then lost it on
his third air, bailing to the bottom of the ramp. It was clear
Tony had won.
The big prize money was awarded, along with the
skateboard deck trophies provided by Paul Schmitt, to the
respective participants. Thanks were given and Jerry
Coombs of Island Water Sports said he wants to do it again
next year. Next time we'll bring umbrellas.
