See How We Are
Elektra Records
Here's X, a long way from those
punk days and the spark is still
shining. I was in a record store
and they were playing this new
Lp. At first I figured it was Debbie
Harry, obviously an embarrassing.
thought, but on one or two songs
Exene comes across like that
Here we find eleven tight, tuneful,
well played songs in the X tradi-
tion, leaning toward a pop, but not
bubblegum, vein-more like an
FM rock approach. Although I
haven't fancied too many of the
X albums since Los Angeles, I
really like this Lp. They seem to
have recaptured that Los Angeles
mood. John and Exene are at
their best singing together here
(their combination has always
been unique) and Tony Gilkyson's
guitar is really provocative Elektra
is pushing the song "4th of July,"
but the whole of the Lp is much
better. The songs really catch
your ear. See How We Are is
enjoyable and danceable, though
I doubt if anyone thrashes to this
anymore. JS
SONIC YOUTH
Sister
SST
Just when the latest batch of
"new" music is sending you off
to slumberland faster than a
Methodist preacher, along comes
a Sonic Youth record to wake you
up with a big hairy bang. This has
been true for the last three years.
The New York band's last two
releases, Bad Moon Rising and
EVOL could whip any other
rockers' butts in a barroom brawl.
But now here comes Sister, to
make even EVOL look pale. (This
is no small feat; I have played
EVOL on an almost daily basis
since its release over a year ago.)
Could it be that I was hungry for
more and more of that hypnotic
sound? Sonic Youth merge noisy,
"velvety" psychedelia, dirty,
powerful guitar chords, metallic
KOS and, occasionally, pure
speed with scary vocals into an
eerie and mesmerizing mix.
Actually, this sound defines the
term "psychedelic" (too bad the
word has those dreadful hippie
connotations). This stuff is
positively mind-bending and
perception-altering from singer/
songwriter/guitarist Thurston
Moor's delicate,quiet vocals on
"Kotton Krown" to a cover of
RS
Crime's "Hot Wire My Heart."
Sonic Youth make everything
else seem dated, dull and
definitely asleep. JH
NECROS
Tangled Up
Restless Records
Ignorant. I despise bands who
turn over a new leaf and burn
their past fans, once they've
decided to tread a different path.
The press release that comes
with this Lp really shows the
Necros' true colors, and since
they don't want anything to do.
with punks, I'm sure the fooling
is mutual, One listen to this short
Lp-Get Burned-and you'll see
it's a case of ego run amok. This
is just punk done metal-style, in
an effort to sound like every other
band that just wants success, and
it's not even good at that. If they
could have come up with original,
funes, new guitar riffs, atypical
drum beatings and a singer who
didn't still sing as if he was in a
"punker band, then you might
have something worth checking
out. This isn't. There's better
metal in the cheapy bins of your
used record store. Rock it to the
garbageman-26 minutes for an
$8.96 list. MH
TO DAMASCUS
Come To Your Senses
Regent Records
What do you get when you look
at the lyric sheet? A picture of the
band, consisting of a wacky.
tattoo-ridden broad named Sylvia
Juncosa sporting sea dog black
basketball sneakers and playing
guitar in a room with bass player
Trya and drummer David. What
do you get when you actually
listen to the album? Though a tad
disjointed the first time around.
with off-kilter vocals that don't
settle right, the record gels with
repeated listenings. Complete
with raw edges and personal
lyrics, the songs can rage and
move. As for the music itself, it
goes something like this: a classy
violin thing will suddenly jam into
a wild garage happening, as a
screaming guitar laser beams
into She-Ra style metal
territory-not bypassing an
oakey-dokey hillbilly scene at the
end of side one. The drum sound
has a distracting strip-tease
quality to it, but Sylvia's raunchy
guitar leads keep the whole thing
right on and far out. Pretty darn
good axomanship, "for a girl." JC
