dirty, dangerous, and often very pain-
ful. So wake up and smell the coffee

ATTITUDE TEST
Here in Lakewood, CA, the skate
spotlight is really rising. There's a
long concrete divider, good for
railsliding or grinders. There's an
elementary school with some
awesome hills and benches to skate
and a Jr. High too. There's also a
park. Talk about skating!

HEAVY METAL MORALS
Since Thrasher is primarily a skate
mag and your music journalism is
secondary, I suggest you be more
selective in choosing the (hardcore)
bands you cover. The Cro-Mags, I
feel, represent values more akin to
the Marines or fanatics than those
of the hardcore community. I mean,
these guys saying that homosexuali
ty and abortion are the precursors to
the "Age of Quarrel." This sounds
oddly like the Swaggarts and
Falwells, hardly the words of a
scholar of "ancient knowledge." I
think when we seek easy answers in
our religious or spiritual beliefs or
simple solutions to resolve problems
and insecurities, we shy away from
one of life's most important tasks, the
search. The Cro-Mags call them-
selves, in one song, seekers of the
truth; I sincerely hope they continue
to seek and aren't content to reside
on a spiritual plateau.
As to their comments on abortion,
I really don't think males have the
right to dictate what a woman can
and cannot do with her body. As to
their comments on gays, well I hard-
ly think homosexuality foreshadows
the apocalypse, considering homo-
sexuality has been practiced since
the days when Sanscrit was a widely
spoken language and Christ walked
the earth. I also subscribe to a sliver
of ancient knowledge, the golden

rule, "Do unto others as you would
have others do unto you." Who needs
to add any hatred to this world?
I hope I've helped some Krishna
flagwaver see that life is not so black
and white, good and bad. I suggest
we youths be wiser than our parents.
and help our race evolve.

WEIGH TO GO
In your May issue, you had an ar-
ticle called "Heavy Rollers." I just
wanted to write in and say that it is
one of the best examples of "shut up
& skate!"

OF RODENTS AND MEN
Hey, I'm nine and really interested
in Thrasher and skateboarding. My
sixteen-year-old sister says I'm get-
tin' to be a skaterat. Thanks a lot.

As to BVS's letter, if he is that hard-
core, why was he lookin' through a
BMX mag, anyway? It wasn't even
a step-by-step. It was more like an
aggression release after a long sum-
mer tour. And the guy doing it was
Bob Schmelzer. Take the V out of
your initials and you'll have what
you're full of.

NO PAIN, NO GAIN
I am what you might call a new
skater. Here is my sad tale. I inherited
a skate from a deal with a BMX bike.
There is a decent skate scene around
here in Lancaster, PA, so I would
hang out downtown and watch the
"skate punks" thrash. They used to
laugh at me and call me a poseur,
because I had a good skate and did
not know how to use it. Where was
the brotherhood I had read about in
your mag? One day, I was returning
from our local 7-11, soda in hand and
Walkman blaring the Misfits. I saw
the curb and decided an ollie was the
best way out, so I built up speed. I
didn't see the little rock that was
about to arrest my flight. But the rock
saw me and sent me headlong into
this guy's car. (Continued on page 99)

WHERE'S THE PROS?
Hey, what's going on? Who the hell are these little dudes? Where's the pros? Well boys, I'll tell ya. They're out there--you just
can't see 'em right now.
This month we want you to take a look at the pictures below. You've never seen them before and you'll probably never see them
again. They're average kids, just like the rest of you. They live in different parts of the country. They ride different boards. They
do different tricks. But they have one thing in common: VENTURES.
