RANT

REEL

With the release of The Search for
Animal Chin, Powell/Peralta has filled
a gap in the skateboard video world.
Previous skate videos have either
been all-action documentaries with
no story and no acting (Powell I & II,
Vision Contest Videos) or Hollywood
wash-outs with stunt skaters, tired,
formula plots and know-nothing act-
ors (Thrashin'). Chin combines some
of the best skating on film and cheesy
acting by the Bones Brigade in a
show that's sure to bust up anyone
with a sense of humor.
Right off the bat the message is
clear that this is a video made by
skaters for skaters. A television inter-
view with the market researcher for
Slash Skates (FOB. Taiwan), who
proclaims that that skateboarding is
about blood, guts and skulls, leads
to a two-story TV taildrop and a
search by the Bones Brigade
(Caballero, Mountain, Hawk, McGill
and Guerrero) for the true meaning
of skating. The Bones boys begin in
Hawaii and work their way across the
West Coast looking for Won Ton "Ani-
mal" Chin, the first, most hardcore
skateboarder that ever was. Chin is
supposed to hold all the answers.
Along the way they meet other
skaters, session incredible spots and
pretty much have a great time.
Of course, the ragged, simple plot
is nothing new. It's like hundreds of
"search for the truth" flicks (surf
ski/bike/boat/stomp around the
world), but ridiculously entertaining
in the vein of an early Beatles movie.
Heads fall off, there's fast-motion
desert driving, Easter Island-style
skateboard statues, Dali-esque night-
mares and a ramp that might have
been set down by skate aliens.
Although the acting can't really be
called such, the Brigade does a good
job of improvising a funny story. (Orb
must be credited for a great bit in his
map seller role.) It works because
they come across as (relatively) nor-
mal people, not flashy, undeveloped
scripted characters.

VIDEO III
The Bones bros might not be able
to act but can they skate. The main
five and a few others, including
Rodney Mullen, Jim Thiebaud, Per
Welinder, Jesse Martinez, Kevin Har-
ris, B.K., etc. blow minds with their
boards and make it look easy. From
half-block, one-truck grinds to
overhead wallrides and synchronized
four-man vertical riding, the skating
is phenomenal. The camera work in
Animal Chin is excellent. The scenes
through the streets of San Francisco,
over bumps, down sidewalks and
across driveways, gives the impres
sion of riding along with the skaters.
The ramp footage shows the beauty
of good vertical skating.
My only real complaint about this
video is the extended nightclub
scene with Johnny Rad. The Rad
Man's crooning was a highlight in
Bones II, but here it seems excessive
and self-indulgent and takes away
from the momentum created. This
part seems to be a vehicle to show
freestyle skating (Rodney Mullen is
unbelievable), but they might have
showcased it some other way and
spared us the song and dance.
The Search for Animal Chin is a
fantasy movie about always having
a good time without the distractions
of real life. The Bones Brigade don't
have to worry about angry parents,
bad grades, drugs, girlfriend prob-
lems or money anxieties. The party
is clean, the guys are innocent of
wrong, cars are given to them,
they're given permission to skate a
beautiful empty hotel pool, they find
the most insane ramp in the world,
the streets are closed off for them,
and they teach little kids how to skate.
Everything's hunky-dory without ex-
planation, but it doesn't need one. If
you're going to take this movie
seriously, as some kind of skateboard
documentary, then you might as well
not watch it. The story celebrates fun
and makes it clear that anyone who
treats skateboarding as anything
other than the means for a good time
is missing the point.
