EUROPEAN PRIMER
First things first-get yourself a ticket. This often con-
jures up visions of thousands of dollars exiting your pocket,
but this isn't always the case. Depending on where you
live, a round tripper to England, France or Germany can
be yours for five or six hundred bills. If you live on the
East Coast, you're a happy boy or girl 'cuz it's consider
ably cheaper to fly from there. The cheapest flight possi
ble can usually be obtained by booking a charter flight
two to three weeks in advance with a definite departure.
(bail) and return (bail home) date. There are usually
about two or three million (exaggerated) restrictions on
the cheapie flights, so check EVERYTHING out to make
sure you're vacation doesn't result in permanent
residency status.
If you're totally feeling it in the cash department, there
is a cheaper way to get across the lake. Many inter
national couriers like DHL, Flying Tigers, Emery Express,
etc., use people to deliver overnight documents to their
destination-this is where you enter the picture. Usually
carriers (you) are only allowed to take one piece of bag
gage (carry-on) but if you improvise and travel LIGHT
you should be able to work something out. The baggage
restrictions, length of stay and price of tickets vary from
courier to courier, so check out as many of them as you
can and get the deal that's best for you. Often these
tickets are two to three hundred dollars cheaper than a
commercial airline's ticket.
And while you're working on your ticket, you'll also
need to score yourself a passport and possibly a visa.
Relax, it's not as difficult as it sounds. Find the nearest
passport agency and ask for details. The cost is about
fifty bucks but it's good for ten years and you gotta have
one, so grit your teeth and fork over the cash. You'll be
needing two identical passport approved color photos, so
score those before you get there (at any travel agency)
otherwise they'll gouge you with big-dollar photo machines
on the premises. If you have your ticket in hand when
you get there, you will get your passport a lot quicker. If
you live in God-knows-where and can't get to a passport
agency, your local post office can take care of it, but it
will take two or three weeks, so be warned.
So now you're going, but where? Well, that's up to you
but here are some Billy Runaway Travel Tips" to provide
you with additional 411 (info) on the perils and pleasures
of International travet.
1) If you plan on visiting several countries, save yourself
some cash and buy a Eurail pass. For about two hundred
and fifty greenbacks you can set yourself up with
Unlimited travel to all the kill skate spots in Europe. They
are available through any travel agency. NOTE: These
passes are not good in England. To get back and forth
between there and mainland Europe you'll have to go by
Sealink (boat/train)-about $70-or by plane-$100-$200.
My advice is score the cheapest plane ticket you can and
fly. It takes one hour versus around nine sleepless hours
of hell on Sealink. Think about it...
2) European trains are packed with the hated tourist
(much like yourself) during the summer. Get a reservation
the day before you travel at the train station-only about
$5 and so worth it-unless you get pleasure from stand-
ing up in the crowded, hot corridor of a train for the
entire trip-not pretty.
3) If you have an overnight train and you want to crash,
reserve yourself a couchette (bed). An extra $12 for the
pleasure, but oh so sweet when you're burnin' out
big-time.
4) If you're only going to be visiting one country, plan on
buying a rail pass for unlimited travel within that country.
This will enable you to hit all the skate spots within that
country and it's cheaper than a pass for all of Europe.
Ask Tourist Information about it when you arrive.
5) Go to your local bookstore and buy a "Let's Go
Europe" guide. They have endless info on cheap
restaurants, hotels, travel, etc. It's one of those things
that you never think you'll need until you do-and then
it's too late, isn't it?
For those who are intersted in coming to Europe and
know someone, a distant relative, perhaps, who lives on
the continent, just pick up a pen and write them a letter
or dial the phone (don't tell mom). This does NOT
guarantee you a free stay with a skater with a good look-
ing sister and a mom who cooks seven-course meals, but
seeing as how skaters the world over are by and large
the coolest species known to man, you should be able to
find someone to impose on during your stay. Just ask
nicely and pray. (Flowing skate-related goodies won't hurt
your plea, either.) Good luck and see you there!
Editor's Note:

Billy Runaway
Of course realize that more than 80% of you will probably
never make it to the next state, let alone a foreign country. But
have no fear, that's what our travelling nomad, skatographer,
journalist, and all-around ambassador of good swill, Mofo, is
twent through all the above mentioned hassles, got
his paperwork together and launched his ass to the Euro-
continent for the second year in a row. Now he's sittin' in a
bar in Madrid, Spain, writing to me about how rough he's hav
ing it 'cause he's gotta babysit a handful of pro skaters who
tagged along. Life's rough: As for that guy Billy Runaway, if
anybody does get to Europe and runs into this guy, don't let
him buy you lunch. His credit limit is maxed already.
