the humblest beginner's carve is a realm all skaters find
themselves in at some point-the flight of fancy. Out-
side ability and beyond reality, it's a skate trip you can
take which can't be spoiled by weather, or cops, or
creeps. As a departure from the usual, we submit the
stories below, contributed by literary-minded readers
with a sense of the absurd. Read on.
Beetlemania

Spike Jones lived alone. He ate alone, he sang alone,
he loved alone. One day Spike was by hisself when a
big fat ugly beetle landed in his Cheez Whiz. He
punched the ugly fat thing with all his might, sending
a shower of Whiz in every direction. The beetle was
dead. Spike had now killed alone. As his pasty tongue
licked the Cheez from his hand he noted the imitation
dairy product was much better with beetle chunks in
it. He also discovered that the chunks gave him a
strange type of craving to fly and slide and stall. Spike
had no idea just how he could do this but he knew deep
down he must find a way.
