AUSTRALIAN RULES
managed to get lost en route to the Atlantis ramp outside of town. The Atlantis
is run by two American skaters from Ohio-Daniel and Andrew, and come
to think of it, the place looks a lot like Ohio, very rural, complete with
lush pastures. Also known as Woodstock, the ramp was the site of a demo
the following day, but best of all, it was on the way to Surfer's Paradise
organizational duties. Also on hand and in slashing style were Johnny and the beaches of the Gold Coast.
McGrath, Arni Pappas and Hugh (Human) McCraig.

5:00 pm
We skidded into the Australian air terminal for a two-and-a-half hour
flight to Brisbane.
9:00 pm Brisbane
We were greeted in downtown Brisbane by a bullish female police of-
ficer and her partner who informed us that hanging out of car windows
and talking to people on the street would not be tolerated in their city. Hav-
ing already seen more cops in the ten-minute drive from the airport than
we'd seen in the two days since our arrival, we unanimously agreed that
they probably meant to keep an eye on us. They also had the ways and
means to ruin our stay with an unscheduled visit to jail. Ironically,
all of this took place right in front of a disco that featured scantily
clad go-go dancers wiggling on sidewalk pedestals, enticing dress-
coded patrons into the throbbing interior of the club.
Sunday April 20th, 12 Noon
Our welcoming committee in
Brisbane had provided us with a
road atlas pointing out all the
local skate spots. Still, we
Burleigh Heads, world famous surf break; and there we were. Roskopp
failed every attempt to borrow, beg, rent or steal a surfboard, so we opted
for body surfing, or rather getting sucked around in the rip and undertow
with the rest of the beach-goers. The surf here is even better than Waikiki,
with points jutting into a large swell all along the highway. In addition to
a surf club, huge lawns and picnic facilities, there was
also an empty and condemned, olympic-size lap pool,
appropriately named Burleigh Pool, complete with
harsh transition, glass and rocks strewn about.
Nonetheless, Christian, Gonz, Roskopp, Gator, Phillips and
Losi clicked into wall walk mode and shredded the thing to the
delight of a gathering crowd. Young surf kids climbed through the
fence to join us and we grilled for info about more spots.
5:30 pm
A sunset session at a small, cement, council halfpipe up the road
in Palm Beach provided a perfect ending to the skate day, even if we
did get eaten alive by mosquitoes or sand fleas or whatever. They were
so tiny we didn't know what was biting, but everyone was dancing around,
slapping themselves.

Top: New Zealander, Lee Ralph, skates shoeless
when he's just screwing around so he won't risk
the consequences of doing street plants. We
won't argue with him. Toe-tal control off the lip
at Geelong. Right: Torqued at Torquay, Mark
Rogowskl kept the crowd a-smiling whether
on or off his board.
