PRO
TORE MOUNTAIN
by Michael Blanchard
I drove all the way from Sacramento
at 85 mph, screamed at the baggage
handler and ran down the corridor at
the San Francisco airport. I was sure
M. was sitting on the airplane curs-
ing my ancestors. I was right. I ran
onto the plane, they closed the door
behind me, and we took off.
M: "Where the hell we going?"
MB: "Atlanta"
M: "Oh, yeah."
In cooperation with the Georgia
Skateboard Association, the NSA
decided to launch it's 1987 Pro Vert
season in Stone Mountain, Georgia,
twenty miles down the road from
Atlanta. Three thousand dollars for
first place. In your face.
Top: Air maestro Tony Hawk's board command and vertical wizardry
once again propelled him to the winner's circle. Bottom: The autograph
hounds were out in force. Eddie Reategui, armed with a broad-tipped
Sharpie, prepares to hack through the thicket..
Despite intense pressure from a
number of manufacturers, the NSA
will be putting on only one streetstyle con-
test this season, at Del Mar. As Frank Hawk
puts it, "Streetstyle contests are not as
enjoyable for the spectators as vertical con-
tests. Most of them don't understand what
they are seeing."
The NSA is sick and tired of people tell-
ing them they do a shitty job. But if you stand
on a soapbox and tell the people what to
do and what to see you'd better expect
some of them to throw tomatoes at you.
Especially when those people are
skaters.
We got to Stone Mountain on Friday,
in time for the last day of practice. We
were a little fuzzy around the edges.
after our red-eye flight, but we were
ready to work up to it.
A number of last year's amateurs
made the decision to turn pro this year,
most without the benefit of their own
model. But so what? What counts is the
way you ride, not what you ride.
Those who joined the "get paid to
play" ranks in Georgia were:
Henry Gutierrez, Cameron Tabby-
tite, Reese Simpson, Bobby
Reeves. Ken Fillion, Allen Midgett,
Jim Murphy, Jeff Jones, Nicky
Guerrero, Buck Smith, Adrian
Demain and Eric Nash. This stew
was also spiced by the return of
former World Champion Eddie
Elguera. I don't know if Eddie
feels comfortable about people
making a fuss over his return to
competition, but it reaffirms my
feeling that skating is a lasting
good thing.
Those not in attendance: Cab,
Blender, Danforth, McGill, the
Godoys, Phillips and a few others
that had either prior commitments or
non-commitments.
Christian's first practice run on Fry
Day was a thing of beauty. The man has
confidence, and he skates with it. High
ollies-both ways-body jars over the
channel, the usual monster backside air
variations, grinds, slides, rocks and
pogds. (Man, what pogos). He made
that Hammerhead bend like an old bitch
Fiberflex aching to burst, but it didn't
