Hi, Doctor. I've been an avid girl-skater
for almost 4 years-until recently. I had
an incredibly bad accident about 5
months ago, and after spending three
weeks in the hospital and 4 months in a
hip cast, I was allowed to once again
regain my skating ability. Almost. I have
found that when I attempt an ollie or a
street plant, I freeze from fear of
smashing into the surface below. My
friends say it will pass in time, but right
now I'm being left on the ground. Is there
any exercise or prayer that will relieve this

Now this is a tough one. I think the
main thing is your self-confidence. You
have to know whether you're going to
make it or beef, and if you do beef, that
you are going to be able to fall the right
way. Once the trick gets to the point
of being dangerous if you do beef, then
you have to skate accordingly. If you're
going for a front-side tweaker and you
know there's a chance for slamming so
hard you wish you had died, it would
be a good idea to think twice about at-
tempting that move. A good way to
overcome your fear is to gradually work
up to harder moves. Skate long enough
to get really warmed up before pulling
something intense so that when you
do, you'll be stretched out and limber
enough to make it.
PAIN IN THE ANKLE
I have weak ankles and don't know
where to turn next. I was wondering if you
could suggest any brands of skate shoes
that provide good ankle support.

Most high top tennies give fairly
good support. I wear Nikes. Why, I
don't know. They're way too expensive
and wear out pretty quick. But they feel
okay, and an all-leather shoe is

definitely your best bet. If shoes with
good ankle support are not enough,
I've got just the prescription for you.
Aircast, dude. Yeah, Aircast. It's an
ankle brace that can be worn with a
shoe and is constructed of a foam-like
material inside a plastic or vinyl skin.
Check your local athletic store or sport
shop. Bottom line is: if you really tweak
your ankle, nothing's going to stop it
from hurting!
WASHED OUT
I have a problem with my trucks. The
washer on the kingpin that holds the
bushings in, folds up over the nut and I
can't loosen or tighten my trucks without
working on them for an hour or more.
What causes this? And, what can I do
about it?

What you have here is a common
problem experienced by those with
aluminum washers. The solution is
pretty simple; go to the skate shop or
even a hardware store in this case, and
replace the soft aluminum washers
with hardened steel ones. While you're
at it replace the bottom washer also,
before it gets bashed up into your
lower bushings. Usually a little thought
and common sense allows you to
figure out these problems yourself but,
hey we're here to help.
