VERBAL ASSAULT
by Mike Gitter
Newport, Rhode Island's Ver-
bal Assault are realists. After five
years and two cross-country
tours, one of which supported 7
Seconds and a recently releas-
ed mini-Lp on Positive Force,
they have explored various
aspects of life and passed from
adolescence to adulthood.
Vocalist Chris Jones lays every
thought and emotion on the line,
relating heartfelt views and ideas
as well as biting criticism of the
ill-begotten world around him.
Guitarist Pete Cremiac, bassist
Dylan Roy and drummer Doug
Earnest empower the sound with
bulwarks of tuneful energy, alter-
nating between melody and
outright thrash. This unusual
combination hints at the distance
they've come since their origins
as a three-piece unit with Chris
on bass.
Their debut vinyl, entitled
"Learn" couldn't have a more
self-descriptive monicker. "As
human beings, we have the abili-
ty to make mistakes," says Chris,
"but the thing that makes us dif-
ferent than trees and chim-
panzees is that we can learn
from our mistakes, If you can do
that, you can build a better world
and a better sell
Despite an average age of 19,
life isn't just a guitar and a rock
'n' roll club in Verbal Assault's
youthful eyes. Nearly a year of
touring and the common ex
perience of growing up fast
brought about a lyrical honesty
apparent in few other groups.
"I've learned both the power and
limitations of music," says Chris.
"A lot of people will come up to
me and say that a song meant
something to them, but, on the
other hand, I realize that the state
government isn't going to come
tumbling down we play a gym-
nasium in Abilene. There's a
definite limitation on what your
music can do, so you realize that
you have to supplement a
musical or scene awareness with
an outside awareness. You have
to be aware of life outside the
record store or the rock 'n' roll
club."
Sometimes labeled a "positive
band," Verbal Assault offers
much more than the average
"straight-edge-mosh-till-you-
want-to-drink" unit. "I feel we are
a positive band," reveals Pete,
but not in the sense that we go
out of our way to find positive
aspects of things that just aren't
positive. We don't see happy
rainbows all the time. As far as
straight edge goes, it's a philo-
sophy of moderation and each
person in the band does what he
wants in moderation... No-
body's going to show up blitzed
out of their mind and pass out on
stage."
"Scared," one of the band's.
newer songs best defines Verbal
Assault's "wake up and smell
the coffee" criticism of the punk
rock scene. They've embraced

hardcore's most positive tradi-
tions and applied them to their
own sentiments. "A lot of times
you see people harping on death
and darkness," says Chris, "and
you've got to wonder why. I've
found that for a lot of people, it's
an easy way of covering up and
not putting their emotions on the
line. It's easier to walk up to so-
meone and say "fuck you" than
to say "I love you." When you say
"fuck you," there's no need to
take any kind of chance of being
rejected, but when you say "I
love you," you put everything on
the line and risk being shot
down. Living is scary and if so-
meone is to continue on that
whole death rock trip and not
show emotion, like a muscle that
isn't used, you'll find someone
who is emotionally nothing. To
throw that away on some fashion
is something I find repulsive."
