he native drums rang with a hypnotic and beckoning beat. The relentless rhythm pulled our
canoe toward shore until it ran aground on the sandy beach. Over the hills and far away, a
bright and vibrant fire blazed, illuminating the night sky with a savage orange glow.
I had just stepped onto the wet sand when a cry of "Yepi-titi-didi-da" exploded from
beyond the dark palm trees lining the beach. The rowers appeared frightened by this
thunderous squeal. With nervous, squinting eyes, they all searched the dense forest.
Like an apparition, a figure wearing a creepy crawdad costume stepped out of the night flanked by
several followers. He muttered something to the head oarsman, and my partner was rapidly forced from
the vessel. The rowers pointed the canoe seaward, and in a flash it was gone.
