HAPPY HUNTING
by Eric Horn
Back when there were no ramps and no
skateparks, a skater had no choice but to
venture into the streets. Through word of
mouth, secret skate spots often surfaced,
only to vanish at the advent of an unfor-
tunate injury or the discovery of some
obscure law. Skaters of the 60s and early
70s were always on the search for new ter-
rain, their hunger and thirst for a new skate
"spot" often carried them through the worst
of dry periods.
With the explosion of street skating in
recent years, that same hunger and thirst
is now thriving with even more ferocity than
before. Skaters are taking it to the streets
once again and a whole new artform has
evolved. "Street spot" sessions are pop-
ping up everywhere. The following are tips
you may want to keep in mind when look-
ing for those fatherlands of sessioning:
DOWNTOWN AREAS:
Your basic downtown area can be al
mecca of bizzare "modern architecture"
buildings that look as though they were
made especially for skating. Parking
garages are also good for an uncontrolled
speed rush or two. Downtown is also fun for
that famous standby, sidewalk ripping.
Scope your town out as it may provide some
exceptional grounds to wreak havoc on.
INDUSTRIAL AREAS:
Innovative asphalt configurations and
plenty-o-parking blocks make industrial.
areas a heaven for skate mayhem. You may
even find a couple of pieces of plywood to
prop up against a wall to blast off from. Here
you'll find the always rippable loading dock
configurations, complete with banked walls
if you're fortunate enough. The most impor-
tant things to remember about industrial
areas is to avoid disrupting any business
that's going on and be aware that you're on
private property.
PUBLIC PARKS/SCHOOL YARDS:
Depending on your area, skateboards
may be prohibited on school grounds or
public park ways. Nevertheless, school-
yards can provide numerous banks,
benches and walls for shredding. As far as
public parks go, they are usually compati-
ble with portable launch ramps and small
kickturn ramps. These are the places where
you can make a session happen.
PARKING LOTS:
Plain ol' parking lots shouldn't be
overlooked as they may be abundant with
curved curbs, endless railslide areas and
an occasional abandoned car. Drive-up
teller areas also can provide some excellent
curb potential.
EMPTY POOLS/DITCHES/RESERVOIRS
If you happen to discover one of these
babies, I guarantee that the amount of fun
you will have will be directly proportional to
the amount of people you tell. Keep 'em
secret to keep 'em cool. These areas go
hand in hand with skating and provide some
of the best possible terrain available.
HOW TO FIND NATURAL TERRAIN:
For reservoirs, pipelines and such I
recommend looking into the local county
library. March right in to the front desk and
ask them to point you to the Government
Documents/Maps section. Once there, look
up your area on a reservoir map. Chances
are you'll discover potential arenas of skate
that you never knew existed. Make copies
of the map.
For venturing around the city, the bus is
cheap, usually stops on command and will
almost always have you home in time for
dinner. Taking the bus also gives you the
opportunity to scope on possible skate spots
that you may not otherwise notice. You may
venture into construction areas where
empty, vacant gunite pools can be taken ad-
vantage of. Or maybe you'll even venture
to the other side of town where slums are
plenty and deserted hotel/apartment pools
likely. The key point here is that you have
to look for these places, they aren't going
to pop up right in front of you. Keep a cons-
tant record of any spots by recording them
on your map. A more expensive spot search
is by airplane. This is the ultimate way for
finding all the spots but you have to pay the
price for it. Of course you can always hop
in the car with a couple of bros and drive
into oblivion.
outlaws, the places we like to skate are
plagued with rules, regulations and speed
bumps. The first skaters were lucky enough
to experience low insurance premiums and
very few rules concerning skating. We
shouldn't have to put up with so may un-
necessary rules but they are a reality. In
today's worried "don't skate/it's dangerous"
environment there are a number of things
you should watch out for.
NOISE/LITTER AND GENERAL
DESTRUCTION:
it
Try to stay away from this type of behavior,
will only contribute to the place getting
busted. When you session a spot try to leave
it cleaner than when you got there. If music
is not cool-don't bring it. If you use skate
props that happen to be lying around, be
sure not to "lift" them and try not to destroy
anything. I'm not saying you have to be a
Boy Scout, but use your judgement in each
particular situation and appeal to fellow
skaters to do the same. A spot will only stay
cool as long as no complaints are made and
no noticeable change in the area occurs.
RULES AND REGULATIONS:
These are what insurance premiums are
all about. If "no skating" or "no trespas-
sing" signs are posted that's usually an
indication from whoever controls/owns the
property that they mean to enforce it.
However, the penalties may vary. If you are
a rule breaker be prepared for anything from
a surprise attack by a wild pack of frothing
dogs to both barrels to a glass of lemonade
from a friendly owner (not likely, but it has
happened). Most importantly, use common
sense. There's also that wild-haired idea of
of skaters have beat the system to survive
in the streets. A survival instinct has been
born and bred in all of us and continues to
motivate us toward adapting to a constantly
changing world. Half of the adventure in
skating is the thrill of going into an area and
sessioning with a risk of getting busted mak-
ing each grind or edge all the more worth
it. If you are unlucky enough to get caught
