MURPHY'S LAW
Murphy's Law
Rock Hotel/Profile
Don't invite these guys to your next
party. take my word for it. After four
years together, NY party monsters
Murphy's Law have pulled together
a darn flexible punk rock album.
Vocalist/ringmaster Jimmy Gestapo
plays it hard, reminding me of the guy
who ripped off the guy who ripped
off the telephone and beer tap from
the last frat party I was at. This one's
got a little for everyone. Whether it
be gravelly, high speed thrash or
melody rooted numbers like the
anthemnic "Crucial Barbeque,"
Murphy's Law knows how to have a
good time. There are a few moments
when the joke wears pretty thin,
given its one-dimensional nature, but
that's a minor point. I hear these guys
have been gigging with the Beastie
Boys and I'm not a bit surprised. MG
DOA
True (North), Strong & Free
Profile/Rock Hotel
DOA kick out the jams with their
most varied and most slickly pro-
duced offering to date. While AOR
trappings are woven all through it,
True (North), Strong & Free" main-
tains DOA's crucial energy while
clearly moving forward in songwriting
and execution. "To Hell an Back
kicks off the disc with a grinding start.
A flirt with Bachman Turner Over-
drive's "Takin' Care of Business"
follows. "Bullet Catcher" pounds
with heavy, metallic riffing, while a re-
done "Nazi Training Camp" tends to
lose its initial ferocity. Throughout the
Lp, Joey's vocals produce strong
melodies, while the overall instrum-
entation comes across much cleaner
and more powerfully. Ex-SNFU
drummer John Card recaptures the
glory days of Chuck Biscuits with
both flash and polish to spare.
Clearly a step forward. MG
MINUTEMEN
Ballot Result
New Alliance
One for the books, The Minute-
men were the greatest at short, to-
the-point, non-thrash shmooze. This
was supposed to be a three record
set featuring reworkings of the top
listener-requested M-men songs.
Because of the untimely passing of
D. Boon, the band couldn't fulfill this
promise. Ballot Result is a one-disc
collection of live-in-the-studio piss-
takes, live-on-the-radio material and
other stuff that'll make you go
"WOW!" There's some real ace
noise on this, and the tracks recorded
in non-typical locales are the
snazziest. BC
DATE OF BIRTH
Around And Around
Portrait Records
Coming to us from Japan is this
six-song 10". Date Of Birth is a three
piece fronted by a female vocalist
who sings in English. Their sound is
very reminiscent of the last Cocteau
Twins LP
Drums are relatively non-existant
in this vocal oriented display of
soothing rhythms and curious twists.
It is heavily influenced by the likes
of 4 AD releases. If you can find it
and afford it, check it out. It's quite
interesting. PB
THE SHOP ASSISTANTS
The Shop Assistants
Chrysalis
The Shop Assistants are a
quartet from Scotland who have
been called-with plenty of good
reason-the female Jesus and Mary
Chain. They share with their male
counterparts that scraping, feed-
back-heavy guitar sound as well as
pop-style lyrics and vocals. But
where the Mary Chain are dark and
gloomy, these gals are mostly sweet
and light.
The album alternates between
fuzzy, fast-paced numbers and pretty
60s-type love songs, even a couple
slow and dreamy ones. There is not
really a clinker on the album; from
the re-mixes of their earlier singles-
"All That Ever Mattered," "I Don't
Want to be Friends with You"--to a
stunning version of Jeff Barry and
Ellie Greenwich's "Train from Kansas
City." The slower ones include
"Somewhere in China" and "After-
Dark," both too pretty for words. JH
THE STRAW DOGS
We Are Not Amused
Restless Records
Boston's Straw Dogs' first full
album marks the fifth vinyl ap-
pearance for the FU's (who changed
their name to the Straw Dogs over
a year ago). This is a surprisingly
solid rock album that showcases the
band's move to greater versatility as
a competent hard-rock unit. John
Sox's vocals have matured tremen-
wide
dously and he croons with
range and vigor. The beefy musician-
ship is fronted by the lead guitar work
of Steve Martin, who has since
departed for NY's Agnostic Front and
whose rapid fingerwork empowers
the proceedings. The Dogs' biggest
asset seems to be their flexibility as
songwriters. Their repertoire in-
cludes faster-paced numbers, such
as "What Will You Do?," as well as
slower, more commercially oriented
cuts, such as "Fool" or "Cavalry."
The metal is heavy, but it never
degenerates into speed-thrash or
anything of the sort. From their hard-
core origins, the FU's-excuse
me-the Straw Dogs have learned
to play metal the right way. MG
PUSSY GALORE
Pussy Gold 5000
Buy Our Records
Pussy Galore is a New York band.
led by rich kids Jon Spencer and
Julie Cafritz. They're alleged to be
the "next big thing," a state of being
that inevitably leads to a contract with
Warners and the cover of Spin. I
hadn't really listened to their last
record but the addition of ex-Sonic
Youth drummer Bob Bert caught my
eye this time.
The music is raw, metallic noise a
la Sonic Youth with perhaps a tad of
the Velvet Underground and the
Stooges thrown in. The tunes are
short blasts of pure noise that invari-
ably end suddenly and unexpected-
ly. "Pretty Fuck Look," which leads
off side one, is great-sounding 60s
punk. The noisiest cuts are "Get
Out" (pure wall of sound, my favorite |
kind) and "No Count." Just what you
need to get the old cardiovascular
system in top working order. JH
