I do believe that I've come up with the
winner of the month. If done right the follow-
ing procedure will save you and a lot of other
skate types time and money. I'm talkin'
about the weak deck syndrome. After you
break the deck you've been riding and
you've bought a new one, try this first.
Before you go and put the trucks on that
baby, the first thing you do is go to the
automotive section of K-Mart and buy a
Bondo Fiberglass Repair Kit. Then sand.
down the deck, paint and all, and reinforce.
the high-stress areas, i.e. the tail, in front
of the back trucks-you know, places where
it might break. Read the instructions on the
box, but only mix about 1/4 of the stuff unless
you're doing a friend's deck too, 'cause it
makes a lot. Anyway, be sure to reinforce
right around the wheel wells if your deck has
any and bondo that baby. Don't use your
fingers to put the stuff on, though; use dad's
best pair of bar-b-que handlers. And don't
worry about putting it over the truck holes,
you can punch them out with a knife later.
Make sure you do it on a sunny day, so that
it can dry. When it's dry, sand it down as
best you can. Another thing that will help.
is buying a deck with no grip tape and cut-
ting it yourself, so you can reinforce the top
and bottom. By the way, you don't have to
sand away all the graphics on your board
to do this. If you really worry about your deck
looking awful, then spray paint over the
fiberglass. Presto, you've just turned your
oh-so-plain wooden deck into a fiberglass
deck and for less money. This should stop
at lest some of the justified whining about
the bad deck syndrome. For tips on how to
buy a better deck, flip through your old
Thrashers and read over the Skater's Edge
and Ask the Doctor; they oughta know.

Another great idea from the annals of
skate knowledge. Seems like a lot of
trouble. It may help strengthen your
board though I'm sure it would weigh it
down quite a bit. Overall, I think the idea
of choosing your boards more carefully
is the best bet. But if you have a board
and perhaps have even cracked or broken
it already, then this idea would probably
work to a certain extent. As far as Win-
ner of the Month goes, maybe next time.

STUNTLESS
I'm a twelve-year old girl, and I got a
board for my birthday. I really like it but I
can't do anything exciting on it. By exciting
I mean some little "stunts" that are simple
but impressive. I don't want to try anything
in which I have to risk my neck. So I was
wondering if I could buy a book on how to
do these things. I don't have a ramp or
anything, just a driveway. So please. Dr.
Rick, if you could send me some info, do.

Hey, girl, get with it. There are so many
cool things to do that only require as
much effort as you're willing to put out.
In other words, the only limit is your im-
agination. It doesn't have to be a certified
trick to be fun to do. Here's one for ya!
This one is real easy and it always impres-
ses people. Actually, you don't even
skate to pull this one off. Stand with your
board in front of you, nose to the left and
tail to the right. Using your right foot,
slam down on the tail, causing it to flip
around your foot as you lift it up, kind of
like a baton twirling over the back of the
hand. As soon as it flips over your foot,
which is now one or two feet above the
ground, catch it with your heel and slap
it back on the ground. It's kind of fun and
after awhile you can get higher and
higher flips and perhaps even graduate
to double flips and, dare I mention, the
"Oh So Awesome" double flipping rever-
sal, which is done the same as the
original way but you flip the board the
other way by slamming down on the nose
instead of the tail. Got it? Now if that isn't
the hardest way to explain an easy trick
I don't know what is. How about a kick
flip-that's a crowd pleaser! Stand in the
middle of the board with your feet side-
by-side at either the edge of the board.
Hang one foot over the edge of the board
and jump sideways. As you jump up in
the air, lift and flip the board around once,
then land on it again. No problem, right?
Practice, be creative, get down.
