It's almost spring, and that means
it's time to do some spring cleaning.
Some of this month's product has
been sitting around for quite awhile,
nonetheless, it's up to us to tell you
about them.
The complete board of the month
is quite a set-up. The board is the
Titus Florian Bohm model from West
Germany with Gullwing Phoenix
trucks, mounted with Gull Wing
hardware and rolling on the 'new'
Schmitt Stix Saw Blades. For
starters, let's look at the board. I
should tell you that this deck had a
hard time in the durability depart-
ment because it is very light, with
front and back wheel wells. The
board has a nice, classic skateboard
shape with a pointed nose, wider
front and smaller tail area. It
measures a little over 30" long, 2.95"
of nose, 6.75" of tail, 10" wide and
14.5" of wheel base. Maybe the
skateboard market in West Germany
isn't as critical as here in the US,

because this board would have a
hard time selling on these shores.
Not a very well made board. It looks
like the tennis-shoe sole graphics:
may have cost more than the wood.
We'd like to say more, but the board
snapped clean at the tail before we
could get into serious testing
sessions.
On the other hand, Gullwing, one
of the oldest in the truck business,
has experimented quite a bit to
develop their most recent product,
the Phoenix 10". These trucks come
with super-hard bushings, so don't
plan on doing some quick turning for
awhile. If you are going to purchase
these trucks and you like comfortable
turning capability, we suggest that
you install softer bushings. The
baseplate has a little more meat on
it than most others on the market.
What I don't understand, though, is
why they make hardware that doesn't
fit all riser pads. These have a hard
time on V-inch risers. The hardware

is strong stuff, and the Allen wrench
application is unique, but, when the
recessed hole gets stripped or dirty,
it can become quite a pain in the ass.
Nevertheless, Gullwing makes a
good, strong product with a lot of ex-

From the all new 1987 Schmitt in-
ventory comes a new set of wheels
that are definitely hot! These hard,
minimum surface Sawblades were
designed to give you the ultimate
speed on ramp and pool surfaces
The graphics read 97 durometer, but
feel a bit on the softer side when you
ride them. The wheel is smooth and
fast, but has a pretty tight radius on
both edges. Not enough for harsher
coping transitions. Sawblades are
also available in 93 durometer. Check

are a real blast from the past. Chris
Strople, Del Mar '78 or what? The
shape is basic-small with a hard
outside edge and nice inner radius
for good control. It doesn't say how
hard these wheels are, but I guess
the blue (soft) are right around 90 and
the white (hard) are close to 97. Both
wheels, though, seemed pretty dull

and lifeless off the board. They seem-
ed to lack some of the life-giving
resiliency that makes a wheel work
for, instead of against you. Worth
keeping an eye on, though. Look for
a variety of colors available soon.
Another product tested this month
was the Impact Absorption Insert Unit
for increased elbow and knee protec-
tion. It's a black insulite foam rubber
pad that can be slipped under the
knee or elbow pad to add an extra
cushion. This product is designed to
help absorb the impact from the "big
slams" and knee slides. The com
pany has the right idea, (however, the
materials should be a little bit more
durable) and a great name. How can
you go wrong with a name like Wipe
Out Sports? Find out for yourself.
