BEOWULF
Beowulf
Suicidal Records
This is straight forward, gut-lashing
metal with a vicious bite. Although
Beowulf's music is speedy of chord.
I wouldn't consider it speed metal. It's
much harder, like the solid com-
bustion Motorhead is known for, yet
heavier on guitar than bass. Tight
musical compositions bring out
some wicked metallic attacks as twin
guitars slice it out with feverous
leads. This four-piece out of Venice,
CA, have the potential to rip it up-
good production, but the music dom-
inates rather weak vocals. Much bet-
ter than some of the "popular" stuff
today. BS
THE MEATMEN
Rock 'n' Roll Juggernaut
Caroline Records
Tesco V and crew are back with
another twelve inches of vinyl, and
mixed results. First and foremost, this
disc lacks one thing that made War
of the Superbikes a massive trash
rock experience: the songwriting of
Brian Baker, who was able to inject
humor into the music itself. Rock 'n'
Roll Juggernaut misses that punch
but has enough strong moments to
make it work. The anthemic title track
features guitarists Lyle Preslar and
James Cooper (ex-Battalion of Saints
bassist) wailing hard and trading off
lead and rhythm lines. "Centurions
of Rome" slows down with powerful
chunkiness and Tesco taking the
James Franciscus role. Full-blown
comedy numbers break up the se-
cond side but get tedious in a few
spots. Musical cliches become just
too abundant and jokes simply don't
work. Strong production creates a
powerhouse 70's rock sound, chock
full of drum pounding and strong
vocals. Uneven but brimming with
strong points. MG
THE
Anything
THE DAMNED
Anything
MCA Records
OK, our copy is that limited im-
port version with the gatefold sleeve
RS
The Damned bring out a batch of
melodic melodies that are, perhaps,
looking for the charts. With slightly
eerie appeal and not much of that in-
famous punk edge left, the sound
has hit-making potential, mixed with
strong rhythms and lots of effects.
Maybe the hit will be "Alone Again
Or or "Psychomania" or "Restless"
or "In Dulce Decorum," or perhaps
even the Meatloaf flavorings of
"Anything." The Damned are the
Damned, even with changes, they
still do it damn good. BS
CULTURCIDE
+
Tacky Souvenirs of
Pre-Revolutionary America
label unknown
The lyric sheet that comes with this
album contains a quote by Comte de
Lautremont (1870) which sums up
Culturcide's refreshing attitude:
"Plagiarism is necessary. Progress
implies it. It embraces an author's
phrase, makes use of his expres-
sions, erases a false idea and re-
places it with the right idea." Cultur-
cide use existing top-40 songs as
vehicles for criticism by slopping ug
ly, intelligent versions of the original
lyrics over the actual music. These
clever, ironic jabs point out the hypo-
cricies of the original songs and
deliver a searing sermon about "the
big lie, the big dream, the big naus-
eating screaming sweating nightmare
of Business America/Consumer
America/Corporate America/Media
America/Fascist America. For ex-
ample, as the opening bars of "We
Are The World," fade, raspy, sar-
castic vocals break in: "There comes
a time when rock stars beg for cash/
And that's how the world's suppos-
ed to come together as one./There are
and the funky band pop-up inside-people dying, and they just noticed/
collectable, eh? After celebrating The And they think they're the greatest gift
Damned's tench anniversary. Any
of all
thing comes off sounding like it
should be the next Lp after Strawber
ries, not after Phantasmagoria. It's
very poppy, with Vanian putting a lot
of variation into his vocal approach.
95 Brian Schroeder MG Mike Gier KC Kurt Carson
"The noisy, clanging music
of Culturcide mocks the original
songs as much as their lyrics do,
creating a funny, poignantly critical
album that should not be missed. If
you can find it, buy it and laugh. KC
FIREHOSE
Ragin' Full On
SST
As the Minutemen were laying
down a more cohesive and
melodic sound shortly before the
death of D. Boon, so Firehose con-
tinues in virtuosic fashion. The songs
are more melodic, lyrics more per-
sonal and the overall feel is less
boisterous and demanding. They
trade the frenetic drive of the
Minutemen for a quieter, though still
powerful, approach. Man-of-the-
moment Ed Crawford sings and plays
energetically, merging the familiar
Minutemen style with swipes at U2
and James Taylor. His vocal perfor
mance echoes Boon's on "Brave
Captain, while taking on a more
soulful edge on "The Candle and the
Flame." Mike Watt and George
Hurley remain an imaginative rhythm
section, boiling over with technique,
energy and guts. Together, they have
moved forward in terms of capabili
ty and strength. Firehose is a flexi-
ble unit, shifting gears from subtle
acoustic numbers to Minutemen-
inspired rippers. MG
THIN WHITE ROPE
Moonhead
Frontier Records
Could this be a new tradition? An
eerie sort of western-blues-punk, a
bit nervous, yet dusty and crafty with
hard edged, menacing raw riffs. The
second Lp from this Davis, CA, quar-
tet finds a mixture of Cream meets
Magazine meets Neil Young, or kind
of like America on acid. Thin White
Rope blend desert rock 'n' roll with
a satisfying, haunt-the-hell-out-of-
your-mind quality, as the echoing
country murmur races to expand
your pupils. Four guys fronted by a
laid-back but harsh crooner, who
creeps as his words crawl into your
system. Tight production on ten dif-
ferent tracks. Thin White Rope
should try cover versions of "Ohio"
or "A Horse with No Name-the
public would roar. Get the picture?
