1986. CD's made their mark as sales rose
dramatically, while public interest in the
seven inch platter declined. Underground
PULKSTE
cult bands garnered mass attention in large
numbers as major labels took interest,
especially in college radio airplay.
On the pop side acts like The Cure, The
Damned, The Cult, Echo & The Bunnymen,
The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Smiths, Sim-
ple Minds and many more rode to a new
level of success as the attention got stronger
than ever before.
Punk took to a shadowy corner as the speed
mongers rose rapidly with the hard-
core/metal crossover. Groups like C.O.C.,
D.R.I, Adrenalin O.D., Accused, Cro-Mags,
G.B.H., Septic Death, Crumbsuckers and
many more became fan faves. But the
speed metal kings, Metallica, hit it large and
paved the way for a new breed. Bands such
as Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth all walk-
ed the major label success trail.
Avant garde makers of unusual noise struck
hard with grinding promise. The Butthole
Surfers, Sonic Youth, The Swans, Big Black,
Scratch Acid, Killdozer and more brought
their insanity to the airwaves.
So much happened in 1986-lots of new
faces and new noises-but it was the
underground that provided the sound that
roared.
Coming from the UK, The Jesus and Mary Chain
mix a mellow pop flavor with intense feedback.
