Although there are (or were) production sandboards available on the open
market, this backyard version looks somewhat more fun and adventurous. While
covering a story on kayak touring in Baja, Mexico, photographer Ben Davidson of
S.F. caught tour leader Patrick Shearn dropping in on a huge dune swell. The
spot is Magdalena Island, a desolate island on the Pacific side of the Baja Pen-
ninsula. As Ben relates, "This was one of our daily diversions, besides watching
spawning gray whales. Pat improvised a sandboard from a kitchen cutting board.
The rides were best in the early morning, after condensation formed a thin, crusty
surface layer during the night." Now we're talking back to basics.
