DIR
are more good freestylers than the eight lucky ones
I who made the finals. Gogo Spreiter (Swiss), un-
doubtedly the best female skater in the world, got 8th
place. I think she deserved better. In 7th came her
countryman Ruedi Matter, who reminds me a bit of
Desiderio when he skates. Sixth was the champion of
last year, Christian Seewaldt (W. Germany). Things
didn't work out so well for him this year, but we all
know that he can skate better. Frank Messmann (Den-
mark) continues to stay on top in European freestyle,
despite the fact that he skates 10 hours of ramp for
each hour of freestyle practice. Good timing to his
music put him in fifth place.
Yoyo Schultz did the best I've seen him do, getting a
deserved 4th with his crowd-pleasing yoyo-plant. Now
this is not one of those ever-so-lame handplants-he
begins the trick rolling, throws it up into a streetplant
and ends up rolling away without his feet ever having
touched the ground. Having just returned from Van-
couver, Gunter Mokulys (W. Germany), amateur world
champion, went for European gold. He failed this time,
but who cares when you're already a world champion?
Shane Rouse (England) skated three flawless runs in a
row and apparently thought, along with many others,
that he was the new champion-but he wasn't. Fren-
chman Pierre Andre skated stylish and smooth to take
top trick honors.
Action in the pipe competition was definitely killer. As
the first skater began his run, the crowd began to roar
DAMP OF and continued to do so throughout the eliminations.
PRESERVATIONS The judges chose their eight favorites for the jam. Why
Gothberg from Sweden wasn't among them, I'll never
understand, but you may not care much about that
anyway. Skatewise, the jam may not have been the
best witnessed in Europe yet, but the enormous crowd
response made everybody feel very euphoric. It was so
intense, it was almost pornographic. Well, not quite, but
very rad indeed.
Gunter Makulys, wheel grab one-handed handstand varial.
At seventh, tying with Frank Messmann, was veteran
Neil Danns (England), Miller-flipping the canyon. Frank
worked the ramp consistently with a 100% unsketchy
style. Sixth place was for German skater Ralf Midden-
dorf with nice egg-plants and channel hip-hops. Fifth
was Phil Bourgoyne (England) with such a furious style
you hardly dared watch him skate. Barry Abrook is
another consistent shredder from England with many
good tricks that earned him a deserved 4th place.
The above-mentioned skaters were good, but the top
three were standouts. Hugh "Bod" Boyle ripped so
hard, I thought his tiny body would collapse. Fast lines,
good style. His alley-oop egg-plants were insane.
Imagine Rambo on a skateboard and then you will
have some idea of the Sean Goff skater type. There is
Nicky Guerrero, lein-air channel crossing.
nothing odious in this statement-it only expresses the
extreme manliness of this dude. Axle stall to fakie air
reentry, 6 foot aerials landing one inch below the cop-
ing, etc. Congratulations on second place, Mr. Goff.
Nicky Guerrero (Denmark) didn't skate his best dur-
ing the jam, but he didn't have to in order to win. With
his trick-arsenal and the authority of a pro, he floated
to an indisputable first. Personally, I rank him among
the elite riders of this planet, but then again, I'm a
Dane like he is.
I'm sorry to say that I didn't witness the slalom and
high jump events. All I know is that Jani Soderhall
(AES chairman/Sweden) and Pierre Andre dominated
the straight cones as usual, and that Mike Rall and Ax-
el Klienhans (both Germans) outdid their high jump
competitors.
Immediately after trophies were awarded everybody
departed for their native lands. Many thanks go to
Derry Thompson and the other English officials for put-
ting on the competition. It was the best European
championships yet-definitely!
