Second Annual Sandy Beach Skimboarding Championships
August 2, 1986 Sandy Beach, Oahu, Hawaii
Ohahu's Sandy Beach displayed the classic lifestyle that makes it world-renowed.
for its crunching shore break, beautifully vivacious young girls, good fun and more
than enough sunshine. Over 30 entries and more than 2,000 spectators turned out
during the course of the one day event. Excellent conditions held throughout, with
5-10 mph trades blowing clean and offshore. Wave height varied between 1 and
3 feet and an easterly swell made for wrapping tubes and smooth down-the-liners.
Highlights included the finals in each of four divisions. Young grommets in the
16 and under class displayed insane 360° airs and layouts. Most of the heat came
from the 17-20 division. Californians Brad Dickey and Jeff Bell went head to head
with Hawaiians John Minildi and Kanai Sharsh and all four schrippers obliterated
the shore break without mercy.
The 21 and over category witnessed California's Nick Hernandez stealing the
show with his incredible wave riding abilities. Island boy Jopa Velles incorporated
air assaults and laybacks but couldn't keep up with Nick.
Sideshows after the main event included the 'Most Radical Flip' contest and a
'Bikini Fashion Show.' Both events kept cameras clicking as beach-goers and media
people stared in awe at the phenomenal layouts and tucks in both events.
Skimboarding is sliding into the eyes of public interest and with successful, fun
events like the Sandy Beach Championships more people are picking up on this
radical activity every day. Next time, be there.
