RANT&REEL
Back in skateboarding's lean years
(80-82), when the activity seemed
relegated to the pure enjoyment of
diehards, we used to get all worked
up at the mere mention of skate in the
media or the inclusion of a tidbit of
action in a TV commercial or news
item. Now times have changed,
skateboarding has come full cycle
once again. Having peaked as a
street-wise sales tool by Madison
Avenue ad hacks, used by the print
media (Time, USA Today) and abus-
ed by Hollywood (Back to the Future,
Fast Times at Ridgemont High, it's
not surprising that the rolling board
now turns up as the center piece on
the big screen with the release of the
movie Thrashin'. While the fact that
Thrashin' even made it to the big
screen is worth applause, it doesn't
exactly rate as a triumph for skating.
or movie making for that matter.
It was with a great degree of an-
ticipation and curiousity that the core
of the S.F. crew showed up at the
Alexandria Theatre on Friday, August
22, for the 8:00 pm premiere. By all
accounts, one of the more boisterous
opening night crowds for Thrashin'
consisted of Fogtowners, Smogtown-
ers, local luminaries and a few local
Jaks (who's brethren figure heavily in
some of Thrashin's wilder action se-
quences). Energy levels were fairly
high that night. A mocking 'street
plant' chant and stomp by the pack
ed upper balcony could be heard
loud and clear in the lobby. Ticket
takers and soda jerks were starting
to get nervous. As soon as the flick
started things quieted down to a
scream and yell session.
The film stars Josh Brolin as leader
of the 'ramp locals' and Robert Russ
ler, of crosstown rivals, the Daggers.
Both actors do lots of their own skat-
ing. Pamela Gidley plays the female
lead, younger sister of Tommy Hook
(Russler) who falls hard for Corey
Webster (Brolin). This sets the stage
for the classic ol' boy meets girl,
Romeo and Juliet on wheels, West
Side Story plot rip-off, 80's style.
Complete with tanned California
Dad units at S.F
Thrashin' debut.
THE FLY
TS CHAINSAW
TRASHIN
beach bunnies in skimpy bikinis and
Vision t-shirts, a soundtrack of bands
you may or may not recognize, car
chases, full-on 'Road Warrior/Roller
Ball' fight scenes, dry hump love
scene and, oh yeah!...tons of
skating.
We're talking skating on and off
cars, trucks, houses, Del Mar's
keyhole, the streets of Hollywood,
drainage ditches, Venice, and the
grand finale, a big downhill through
Malibu's Encinal canyon featuring
a slew of everybody's who's any-
body's in the skate world.
The only reason I know all of this
is because I saw the movie the follow-
ing night (with the other six people in
the theater), since Friday night's
showing was shut down less than a
third of the way through the film.
Yelling is one thing, but when bottles
started bouncing off the screen, SF's
finest showed up to shut it down and
escort everyone out of the theater for
refunds.
All in all, Thrashin' is not exactly
Academy Award material and even
as B-movies go...well-Thrashin'
starts out O.K. and gets worse.
However, it's worth a viewing just to
see all of our skate bro's engaged in
doing what they do best, skating and
getting rowdy. Playing various gang
members, skate punks and ne'er-do-
wells are the likes of Tony Alva, Ed-
die Reategui, Steve Olson, Christian
Hosol, Steve Steadham, Jesse Mar-
tinez, Johnny Ray, Mark Munski,
Mondo and Chris Cook. Classic high-
lights include: Christian slamming
into a van, Lance Mountain recreat-
ing his roof drop scene from the P/P
video as a stunt double for Brolin,
and Cooksie's blowfish flyaway stunt
air at the end of the film. Best perfor-
mance honors have to go to Eddie
Reategui for his eyebrow-twitching,
beer drinking, shrugging scene
behind a serious shot of Pam
Gidley-hilarious.
Go see Thrashin' (if you still can)
for a few laughs, otherwise just bor-
row the video when it comes out.

nothin' yet. You might very well be sit-
tin' there whining to yourself, "Well,
the last one was good, but didn't they
go metal?" Fuck no! These are the
Kings of Punk! and don't forget it. The
angry growls of Jerry A. and the
speedy raw riffs of Pig Champion will
be in you mind for weeks to come. I
still can't figure how Pig Champion
moves his chubby fingers so quick-
ly. But he does, and that's all that
counts. For those of you who still
disbelieve their dedication after see-
ing the color cover, the carvings are
for real. Chalk one up for Jerry A.

NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS
"Kicking Against The Pricks"
Homestead Records
You could stand on a rock all day
long trying to figure out what the ti
tle of this ip is all about. Well, Mr. Nick
probably spent so many nights on the
road, laid up in hotel/motels, that he
finally sat down and flipped open a
good old Gideons Bible and came
across ACTS 26:14. Besides that, this
latest Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
release ain't bad at all. Not much
reminiscent to the Birthday Party
days, but quite entertaining
nonetheless. I'm stoked that Nick is
persuing his influences-the drawl,
early country western type stuff, like
"Long Black Veil," a tune that Johnny
Cash did on his live at Folsom Prison
album. Other cool covers he does are
"By The Time I Get To Phoenix," a
version that puts Glen Campbell to
shame, and a droney version of "Hey
Joe." This album goes great with the
right kind of woman, candlelights in
the bedroom and a giant bottle of red
wine.

REFORM SCHOOL GIRLS
Original Movie Soundtrack
Rhino Records
I've heard this movie is great.
Something about a bunch of lusty,
sweaty girls running around sporting
slinky lingerie in a reform school.
There's a king bitch, played by Wen-
dy O. Williams, who's supposed to be
a lesbian, and there's the
authoritative bull-dyke figure running
the place, played by Patty Asp. But
besides that, the soundtrack of the
movie is metal-mama-malicious.
Four songs are done by Wendy O
herself. She sounds a lot different
now than she does on my copy of
"Butcher Baby" by the Plasmatics.
Anyway, she still rocks. Other bands
on this deal are the Screamin' Sirens,
Girlschool, Girl's Night Out and a tune
by Etta James. This is one hot rockin'
soundtrack. My favorite since The
Wanderers.

MY MOVIE
Jodie Foster's Army
Placebo Records
A little late in this column, the fair-
ly latest release from JFA (in the
form of a seven inch) proves that a
bunch of kids who, several years
ago, decided to start banging on in-
struments to create a noise of their
own, can indeed progress into an
awe-inspiring combo. Although
mostly an instrumental effort (with
the exception of some harsh Brian
Brannon vocals on one track), what
we have here is what could be the
soundtrack for a surf-spaghetti
western. Great stuff that's worth
listening to again, and again, and
again.

ROCKIN' IS MY BIZNESS
Peter Miller
.22 Records
Take a long time rocker like Peter
"Buzz" Miller, who's pumped out
the licks with guys like Billy Fury
over a decade ago (when Pete and
a young Keith Richards were con-
temporaries), along with a few long
time San Francisco Bay Area club
circuit notables like Roy Loney and
Stu Blank, put them together on
twelve inches of black vinyl, playing
a bunch of obscure rockabilly hits by
the likes of Johnny Cash, Johnny,
Dorsey and T-Bone Burnett, Keith
Richards and Mick Jagger, plus an
original...well, you've got onehell of
a rip-a-rocka, knock-a-rolla record.
This baby drives me crazy with
songs like, "Guess Things Happen
That Way," "Claudine," "Flame Of
Love," "Rosalie" and many more.
Ask for it by name.

GET OUT OF MY YARD
L.A.'s Wasted Youth
Open Circle Records
It's been awhile since we've heard
from these guys. A six song twelve
inch EP with song topics ranging
from Jerry Falwell to starving in
Africa, everyday basic religion to
getting older every year, being
young with nothing to do but get in
trouble to more about religion. Well-
balanced production that still
delivers the chaotic nervousness
you deserve. Goes to show you, old
punk bands never die, they just
resurface like earthworms when it
rains.
