ASK
SKATE CLUBBING
THE DOCTOR
I've been skating constantly for about 1
year although I've only ridden a few ramps.
Me and a couple of the guys at school have
been trying to find wood at a cheap price so
we can build one ourselves. I was talking to
a PE. coach one day and she said it would
be a good idea to petition with all the skaters.
at school and make a Skate Club" for next
year. She also said that the school would pro-
bably take care of the expenses for building.
a ramp at the school. Then insurance came
into the conversation. She said all kids in-
volved would have to have a parent's written
consent so if someone got hurt the school
wouldn't be liable. Anyway, the guys are ex-
cited and we're gonna try our best to get the
ramp built. What I want to know is where we
would put it so no jerks will vandalize it? Also.
what do you think the chances for getting the
ramp are?
Danny "Bone-Dance" Ulibarri

Sounds like a great idea, if you can get
the school to go for it. I kind of doubt it
though, because of the insurance pro-
blem. Insurance companies tend to shy
away from most sport related coverage in
general these days. But, if the written con-
sent and release of liability is enough for
the insurance company then go ahead
and do what's necessary. The skate club
idea also sounds great. It will be a rough.
long road to follow, but do what you can
and good luck.
ALL WET
Our drainage ditch is great for skating, but
there's huge cracks in rough areas in the in-
terior. There's also water running from one
drainage pipe to the other through the mid-
dle of the ditch. If we blocked up the pipes
and had the cracks filled in and the rough
areas smoothed out, the water in the pipe
would probably overflow and we'd get bitch-
ed at by the city. What should we do?

Go ahead and fix the ditch as best you
can and try to stop the water. Maybe do it
temporarily, just long enough to skate and
then release the water when you're done
so no problems arise. Tip: a good way to
dry a damp skating surface is with 'kitty
litter. Just spread it over a wet spot then
sweep it up. Voila! If you can't do that then

it will be a while before anyone notices
and in the meantime you can start looking
for another spot. Never be satisfied with
one spot. Always try to find an alternative
place to skate. Keep one on reserve,
because sooner or later your favorite spot
will be rendered unskateable and you'll
have another one to fall back on. Fixing a
skate spot is sometimes impossible, so
the more time you spend searching, the
better.
SKATE! THIEF!
Help, I have a Variflex hex. This makes the
third Variflex stick that has been stolen from
me. Everytime I buy one these tough third
graders wtih mohawks threaten me and steal
my stick. Then they sell them to my friends
and my friends paint them and then ride
them in front of me. What should I do?

PS. I'm only 19.
This is either a joke or your are in need
of new friends. These guys are third
graders and you're nineteen? However
old these guys are, anyone who pulled
that shtick on me would regret it. Having
your stick ripped is definitely the lowest.
Unless you're prepared to retaliate the on-
ly other suggestion I could make would be
not to hang around with the same jokers.
If the situation arises again, stand firm.
Don't give them your stick. Just walk away
or even run, or skate. If that doesn't work
then turn around and slash their face with
your board. Use the edge of your board, it

splits skulls rather nicely. When you have
enough confidence from that ordeal, go
after your friends and tell them unless
they give back your other skates the same
might happen to them.
BURNING QUESTION!
A few questions: 1) In whose lucky hands
did the "Turning Point" ramp end up in? How
much did it really cost to construct? 2) Who
invented the skateboard and when?
3) Was Duane Peters really the first to suc
cessfully complete a full loop on the "Radi
Ramp? 4) Where did you get your doctor's
degree? and 5) Taking into consideration the
rapid growth of skateboarding in the eighties,
do you foresee the reappearance of
skateparks in the 1990's? After all, wasn't the
reason skateparks were so abundant in the
late '70s because of the growth of skating
during that time? Most new businesses go
under because they have trouble attracting
enough business. With the skate population
growing at the rate that it is I would think
skateparks would be flooded with business.

Starting with numero uno, believe it or
not the Turning Point ramp is resting
somewhere near Malibu being used as a
giant terrarium art project, sitting upside-
down with 9 damn plants inside. Original
cost was about twenty to thirty thousand
dollars. Pretty expensive planter, huh?
Question two: Someone's grandpa; your
guess is as good as mine. Three: Yes.
Then he broke his collarbone going for
more. Four: I graduated from PHUKU and
majored in skatology. Five: It might hap-
pen if you find some crazy rich dude who
doesn't care about making money, but I
doubt it.
Thanks for the letter. Keep skatin'.
