I stumbled upon three hot new
shapes that are just waiting for your
fave wheel and truck combos. How
many boards do you see that are
really different, not just wood or
foam, I mean different? The new JFA
Don Lincoln model is quite different.
It's made from very strong wood
pressed into a comfortable concave,
however that's not what you notice
about it at first glance. Your eye will
see the mutated hammerhead
square nose and you'll say, 'what the
hell is that?" It has 2½ inches of
nose, almost 7 inches of tail and an
overall length of 30% inches. I can't
tell what the idea behind the nose
shape is but don't knock it 'til you've
tried it. I liked the tail area of this
board the best because it has a real
smooth, tapered concave through-
out. Placebo Products, P.O. Box

Then I came upon the Sure Grip
International Steve Steadham
design, a board that's not much dif-
ferent than the shape he had with
Powell. Big in front with a smaller tail,
the board seems to narrow in the
hips (rear wheel wells) far too much.
It goes from 10%" wide to 8% in
critical area which usually is the focal
point for cracks and breakage. It
features a little more nose for street
at 3%. Although it says Pro Street,
I would be a little bit cautious about
my first big jump or drop off. I don't
see any problem for smaller skaters
and it seems to be a good vert cross
over design, but heavier skaters
might want to try another board. Also
available in epoxy glass for extra
strength, buy or die. S.G./Steadham

Another winner in the graphics
catagory is this small Brand X
Dogma Ill model. It is a smaller,
street-oriented stick. While some
boards get smaller in the hips, the
Brand X gets bigger, for those board
crunching jars. At 2914" x 9%4" wide,
with good, rounded edges, it's my
candidate for the board of the month
Don't let graphics or your friends
chose the board you ride. Go into a
shop by yourself and make your own
decision. Besides, graphics are on
the bottom where nobody will see it
unless you are walking. Brand X Pro-
ducts, 32 W. Anapamu, Suite 234,

The wheels we ride today come
and go. It seems that only a few
years ago everybody was on Road
Riders, then Sims Snakes and finally
Powell Peralta's Bones. Although
the modern skater has more good
wheel choices than ever, Powell
Peralta has been at the forefront with
excellent urethanes, basic shapes
and good durometers (85A, 90A,
97A). Now for "86, the 95A Rat
Bones, the same shape as the
regular Rats, just a little harder; for
those extra long slides in the street
and that little bit of stick when you
need it on ramps. Even though they
don't feel that hard (95A), they are
very fast and very smooth Check
'om out at better shops everywhere,
or write Powell, 501 E. Gutierrez St.,

When you think about trucks, you
think about bushings, and the new
Thunder bushings are definitely the
hardest. I mean, you put them on
your trucks, tighten the king-pin
down just a bit and snap, they are like
granite; smooth, stable and they
don't wear out. I thought the
Trackers were good, but these are
even harder. Check 'em out. They
even say Thunder on them, so don't
buy imitations. Deluxe, P.O. Box

While concave seems to be the
major thing in boards today, a lot of
companies seem to build with more
concave and less structural stabili
ty. The new Variflex line of boards
are out and these boards are fine-
looking. Light with very good con-
cave. When I set one up, I realized
two things: 1) Don't tighten the
mounting hardware with power tools
because the bolts will pull really far
into the deck and will eventually lead
to cracks or delams, and 2) Check
the front truck holes to see if they are
on a flat surface area, or like some
that I have seen, on the scoop nose,
which could lead to broken
baseplates or a different ride. These
boards are a definite step up from the
Variflex boards of the past but check
out the concave they're really very
comfortable. Varillex, 9644 Lurline
Ave., Chatsworth, CA 91311.
We haven't heard a lot from you
people out there about rip-off prod-
ucts or bad designs in equipment.
but if you write we can print it and
eventually companies that make
lame stuff will figure it is in their best
interest to make quality products.
