ZINE
THING
THE TONGUE OF PASSION
650 Vistamont Ave., Berkeley, CA 94708
From right here in good ol' Northern
California comes a great new zine from Cur-
tis Hsiang. Great photos, interesting layout
and basic slickness makes this a hot one
for sure. Deviating from the mentality of
most mags, the Tongue Of... focuses in on
the mind of the not-so-average skater. A
good spread on East Bay (S.F.) activity and
no silly captions accompanying pictures. A
strong sense of localism in this 8½" by
5% "er creates a definite personality of it's
GRIND
1150 16th Ave. E, Seattle, WA 98812
This rag hails from the great wel north
and offers everything a skater could ask
(mommy) for. Ish #2 sports interviews with
the Faction and Germany's Upright
Citizens, as well as a talk with top freestylers.
Per Welinder and Bob Schmelzer. Rad local
coverage, hockey stories and "aggro"
shots give each issue of Grind just enough
to please. What other zine boasts a hip-hop
section? (Reviewing the top rap tunes of the
day.) A real steal at 75c..
LAPPER
P.O. Box 6777, Falls Church, VA 22046 (one
dollar)
All I can say is that the last two issues of
Lapper just reiterate the fact that it is one
of the best 'zines in existence. The latest
issue is even quick printed. The rag is not
only thick but each individual page is jamm-
ed with great photos and words. A great im-
provement is made in the new issue with
layout and design-Featured in Volume 2.
No. 1 is the saga of VA's Cedar Crest
Ramp, number 3 has coverage of Cedar
Crest Probe/Am contest and good interview.
with Stacy Peralta. Also, there is great
coverage of all surrounding ramps, ditches,
pools, streets and even slopes (snowboar-
ding). Editors Bruce Adams, Wade Herren
and Bonnie Blouin obviously put in a
multitude of hard hours in completing this
full sheet publication. I must also stress the
excellence of the photo quality (along with
quantity) as the half-toning complements
dozens of large circulation stature shots.

CONTORT #3
39 Melville Ave., Boston, Mass. 02124
Here is another edition of Contort, a full
sheet job from Massachusetts. In this issue,
Dan Estabrook and Larry Rich expose a
barrage of shots from the last Houston con-
test, coverage of the local Chelmsford
Ramp and Boston street and ditch shots.
The copy quality is O.K., but there is somet
great photography included.
