WE SHOULD BAN TV
This letter is in rebuttal to Sean
Whitely's letter in May. He slandered
the TV show "Fast Times." He said:
"They should ban that stuff on TV."
And all because of the fact that they
got a couple of faked-out skate dips.
So what! At least it's skating. And it's
prime time television. Pretty soon
those 30 second clips on that show
might turn into whole episodes with
plots based on skating, and might
have guest appearances by real
skaters. And that might lead to some-
thing even bigger. I mean, skating's
got practically zero air-time as it is.
You gotta start somewhere. So, I
think we can all put up with a couple
of fake-assed posing actors jumping
around on the tube...at least until
something better comes along.

The worst mistake any of us can
make right now is worrying what,
where and when skateboarding is
going to show up on the boob tube.
Commercial clips and Fast Times at
RH should be a warning to us all.
Shut the damn thing off and go
skate.
OA-WHO?
Why did you bother calling your ar
ticle on Oahu Hawail"? That's like
writing an article on Del Mar and call-
ing it "Southern California." I am from
Maui and there are also a lot of good
ditches and half-pipes over here as
well as rad skaters that shred them.
Next time you come to the islands
remember that there are seven other
islands that make up the state of
Hawaii. So check 'em out!

Sure, kind of like how Mobile is all
there is in Alabama. Don't fret though,
brahs, we'll be back in the islands
come September for full coverage.

EXCORIATING EXPRESSIVITY
Listen, the kids in my school want-
ed your magazine, so having nothing
against skateboards, I subscribed.
But what is it with the scatological
language? Are all your subscribers
fixated on gutter talk? This tendency
of your correspondents and featured
writers toward battology in the use of
cacophemisms is flapdoodle.

STOKED, NOT STONED
Last Friday night my skate pals and
I went out for a late session. When
we got tired we decided to go over
to our Jr. High school. They were
putting on some production deal. At
intermission we were allowed to go
outside. We skated hard and every-
one was cheering for us until Mr. Bur-
ruto(MEAT) the Principal came. He
saw me do a drop off this dumpster
and took my board away. On Monday
he gave me all this shit about how I
could have gotten hurt and how I
didn't know what I was doing. He
asked me if I was stoned that night
which really got me pissed. "YOU
DON'T HAVE TO BE STONED TO
DO RAD AND CRAZY THINGS!" I
got my board back the next day, after
detention. So much for skating the
school.
TECHNIC TENACITY
I
J.C.
Amherst, MA
am writing this letter in response
to your article "Hackin' Off" by Chauf
Fer. In his article he made many neg-
ative statements concerning comput-
er technology and the introduction of
such technology into the school sys
tems. It is true that a computer is a
machine conceived from an idea and
made into a physical invention, but
this physical invention is not sup-
posed to replace the human mind but
to
be a tool used by the mind. We are
at the point where information is ea-
sily accessible and the amount of
data can be excessive and tedious
to wade through. The computer can
let us discriminate, emulate, or per-
form a conditional decision based
upon data we never have to seo. All
the user has to do is decide what
parameters will classify his data as
significant and what actions to take.
Computers don't think, they perform
(to the degree of their user's prof
ciency) just like any other tool."
The need for kids to be exposed
to different and interesting types of
classes, whether computer literacy
or woodshop skills, in our school sys-
tem, is a reality. The "high-achieving
few only get where they are because
they are into what they do. They have
a thirst that goes unabated until they
find the answers and really under-
stand what's going on. In a free world
people should be able to accept or
decline because it is their prerogative
and right to do so, not because some-
one says they have to do something
or the options are not there. Creative
powers are utilized only when the
opportunities to use them are avail-
able.

All I can say is re-read the article
and see that you're basically repeat-
ing what was said. The computer
can be a great tool. It's not the tech-
nology that poses the problems in
schools, but the misconceptions of
those teaching it and the methods
they use. Also, if it's information you
want, your best bet is still the library
and the people there who are trained
to help sort out the crap. Ted
