The deck market moves in cycles.
First it was the 10 inch width, then
concave, now spoon nose and cuta-
way shape. For popularity it's been
Duane Peters, Alva, Hosol, and now
It is definitely Schmitt Stix.
The best-selling board I have seen
for awhile is the 10" x 30" Jeff Grosso.
When you combine an excellent,
functional shape and quality wood,
the sales will no doubt continue.
When you hold this board next to a
board of cheaper quality, feel its
edges and lightness and you know
you are getting the most board for
your money. Where a smaller board
is more street-oriented, Grosso's
shape and size make for a good
all-around axe.
The Grosso design features a
squared-off nose so it absorbs im-
pact better. A pointed board would
split on one smash, this board would
bounce back. Also, 3" of nose and
6-1/4" tall make it very maneuver-
able, and the 15-3/4" wheel base is
ideal for a smooth ride. Its quick
turning radius and front wheel wells
(no rear) make it a good "jumping
board." The only thing I didn't like
about this board was that it's too
small in the hips (tail area) and the
ones I've seen broken were broken
In this area.
When it comes to riding, this deep-
dish concave is state-of-the-art with
killer scoop nose, steep tall and an
extreme flip on the end for maximum
foot placement. The die-cut tape that
came with this board left quite a bit
of untaped area around the tail so I
recommend using your own tape,
but the board is excellent. Schmitt

Mesa, CA 92627.
If you're talkin' trucks, one of the
biggest in the business is Indepen-
dent. The new Stage IV's are the
latest in the Indy line. The geometry
looks the same and feels the same
but these don't break like some of
the Stage Ill's. These trucks are the
best in their line and I think everyone
should bolt them on their board, jump
off a van and feel the ride. What
more to say? Write to Independent,
PO. Box 1127, Capitola, CA 95010.
The new Alva Rocks Il from LA
are still 96A and 90A only now thin-
ner. The decrease in weight and fric-
tion means more speed. Alva pro-
ducts make quality stuff so sure
enough go ride 'em. A smoother
edge, inside and out, makes these
wheels look a lot more marketable.
The 96A's slide with ease and wear
evenly-quite a switch from other
wheels that cone out so horribly.

Rock's il and Indy 169 Stage IV's.
I'll admit, at first glance the Dog-
town Web board looks pretty funky,
but when it is set up and you're grab
bing the new webbed rails, a
backside air feels great. Good solid
laminates and comfortable concave
(not the deepest) make this an excel-
lent board. A solid 2-3/4" nose, ample
6-1/2" of tail, lengthy 16" wheel base
(30-3/8" long x 10-1/2" wide, for big-
ger people) make this board far from
unstable and quite comfortable.
E
Dogtown equipped this board with
their new DTS Rails, with cut away
hand grips for aerial maneuvers. The
grips are interesting but they didn't
seem to slide as well as some other
rails. Dogtown has come back from
the crypt so to speak. They made
many pro models in 1978 that were
excellent, but they seemed to disap-
pear in a sea of legal hassles after
the big downslide. Now they are back
with better boards and better skat
ers. Dogtown Skates, PO. Box 5512,
Venice, CA 90296.
Bones Bearings are the longest
spinning bearings I've seen. When
you find them at a shop you'll think
$22.00 for a set of bearings is ridicu
lous, but these bearings, if treated
properly, will last two to three times
longer than a regular set. The reason
is you can clean them out, repack
them and they are ready to roll again
and again. You know Powell makes
top drawer stuff, so would they send
Tony Hawk to a contest on regular
bearings? No way. They probably
went to Switzerland to get them. Like
all bearings, dirt and water will kill
them, but you're gonna do what you
want anyway so check 'em out and
save up some money and you won't
be sorry. I guarantee it. Fast, fast,
fast.
Dogtown Web deck.
It seems that some of these pro-
ducts we review are slow in coming.
Manufacturers, send in your stuff,
we won't be too hard on them. I'd
like to try some of the new Bennetts,
for nostalgic reasons. So come on
Mr. Bennett, send some along and
we'll give them the test. Skaters,
watch out this summer for the scads
of products that are flooding the mar
ket. If you're looking at new equip
ment, make sure you check the qual-
ity as well as you can before you
buy. Send all comments and fraud
