TICK, TICK, TICK...
Skating has become over-commer
cialized and becomes worse. Even
THRASHER is being overrun, giving
up space, that could be articles and
stories, for money-the corruptor. I
know you guys need to make money
so I'm not blaming you. Maybe com-
mercialism is what we need, be-
cause when the bottom drops out
we'll be back where we were three
years ago: free of dwids and tourists
and ripping it up for ourselves.

P.S. Dirthead, skating isn't an art, it's
fun. So don't try to be deep and
artsy-fartsy
WHO'S ASSKIN'
Dear Mr. THRASHER, Every time
I wear my Powell Vato-Rat shirt peo-
ple think it's the posterior view of
some donkey's ass and they ask me,
"Why 'er there X's on them asses?"

ANIMAL MAGNETISM
One of my good friends was skat-
ing downtown when he wiped out.
He went into a local restaurant to
ask for a piece of ice and they told
him the vet was across the street,
just because of the way he was
dressed. People treat skaters like
animals. Why? My friend didn't say
anything obscene to the woman in
the restaurant because it would have
backed up her statement about skat-
ers being animals. I think skaters are
the best kind of people. Skating and
reading your mag means a lot to me.

RESURGE RESEARCH
I think I figured out why we have
skate hassles. I have done some re-
search in the libraries and I found
one book to be very informative. It
related that in 1965 skating was
about as big as it is now. Then mags
like Good Housekeeping started to
print articles with statements like:
*Seldom has a sport produced such
injuries as broken arms, wrists, con-
cussions, and lacerations." Life
Magazine got into it also, with head
lines like: "Too Much Moxie Breeds
Mayhem In The Streets." Then the
California Medical association said,
It's a new medical menace." The
biggest wipe out came from the in-
surance companies: "Skateboarders
complicate your driving, we strongly
urge that this summer you keep a
strong look out for this new traffic
menace." People like this are what
brought skating underground. I think
the next generation of parents and
skaters will be a lot more apprecia-
tive of our sport

INFLUENTIAL POTENTIAL
I'm sure you guys have seen that
new Powell-Peralta video. I just saw
it today, and overall I thought it was
pretty good. What killed the flick was
the sequence showing the brigade
vandalizing skate areas with graffiti,
skating into crowds of pedestrians in
New York, and other stupid crap.
Way too many young skaters (even
some not too bright older ones)
idolize these guys. After seeing this
video, a lot of these idiots are going
to say, "Hey, let's skate in a group (or
wasn't that more of a gang?) and
smash into people on the streets!
Just like the Bones Brigade!!" or
"Hey, this is a good place to skate,
let's write Bones Brigade on the
walls so that it'll look cool! Yeah, just
like that guy on the video!" I say,
"Yeah, just like the kids did at one of
our favorite skate spots. After they
painted that garbage on the wall, the
local government people decided to
put steel brackets jutting from the
skating surface. One less place to
skate now." And skaters are always
complaining how their city prohibits
skating in public areas. The sure-fire
way to get them to make those laws
is to start bashing people while riding
on skateboards. These jerks aren't
only screwing it up for themselves,
but also for the rest of us that don't
believe in that HERO nonsense.

BLAST-FAME-Y
Tokyo, Japan
I am a frequent reader of THRASH-
ER, I especially enjoy the Puszone,
and your articles on hardcore skate
rock. But what I don't understand is
how you guys can be based in the
same area as one of the most incred-
ible bands ever to exist and virtually
ignore them. The band I'm referring
to is BLASTI. Every issue me and my
friends scan the pages of THRASH-
ER hoping to find some kind of news
or information on BLAST! I often
wonder if BLAST! gets frustrated
over this lack of recognition. How
could a band have such a huge fol-
lowing and still be ignored? My
friends and I decided to write this
letter, hoping someone in BLAST!
might read it and realize that there
are dedicated fans who think they're
the greatest, and to keep up the dev-
astating work.

Funny you should ask, BLAST! does
get frustrated with our repeated de-
nials. Seriously, though, they're up
for long overdue skaterock coverage
any month now. T-ed.
