CONTEST VIDEO
(Presented by Vision. Running
time 60 minutes each.)
Vol. 1, Del Mar "Spring Fling"
This tape was the most com-
prehensive of the three I saw. It con-
tained "raging freestyle and pool ac-
tion starting off the Summer Contest
Series," as the sleeve tells us. The
cameras first focused on the incred-
ibly smooth Bob Schmeltzer, then on
a flowing Welinder, a styling Rocco,
and eventually, a yet unparalleled
Mullen. Amateur and beginning free
stylists should appreciate this sec-
tion because it is a rare chance to
see entire runs performed uninter-
rupted, with a variety of moves and
styles. The same can be said about
the pool sequence, except that you
don't see the diversity of tricks (2/3
of the moves are backside airs). The
pros involved are Kasai, Staab, Mil-
ler, Gator, Hosol, Phillips and Hawk.
The air buzzes with flying bodies and
the sound of metal and wood grind-
ing coping. If you never get your fill
of pool contests you'll want to look
into this.
Vol. 3, Vision/Sims "King of the
Mountain," Trashmore ramp,
Virginia Beach, VA.
We're presented here with the final
thirty minute ramp jam of the contest
with Mountain, Ruff, Philips, McGill,
Losi, Kasai, Hawk and Caballero
presiding. Taking for granted that
there are a lot of bionics, there are
also McTwists, a canyon Miller flip,
Hawk's bag of tricks and an assort-
ment of other pro specialties. The
remaining thirty minutes of the tape
is plugged with interviews of the
crowd, parents, girls, and skaters.
There are also slo-mo clips and
shots of people who didn't make the
final cut (Gator, Groholski, Nolder,
and a few others), but these are
small and almost insignificant. Skat-
ers of large ramps and those of you
who like to see non-stop sequences
of aggression will appreciate this vol-
ume the most.
Vol. 4, Tracker/Indy "Terror
in Tahoe," Mile High Ramp,
Tahoe, CA
This volume begins with a lot of
promise, but again, it's just sixty min-
utes of the same thing. As for quality,
this tape is pretty sad; one camera,
quick zooms and poor lighting (as
the sun sets during the second half
one side of the ramp is dark and the
other shadowed). The contest is
great, though, and if you can get
through this tape without developing
a brain tumor from eye strain you
might find something in it for you.
There's a wider variety of skaters on
this tape and the ramp itself is more
elaborate than Trashmore, showcas-
ing multiple lines and a larger spec-
trum of moves.I suggest watching it,
but not buying it.
Quicksilver
Columbia Pictures
Kevin Bacon stars as a busted
stock broker (with a peach fuzz mus-
tache to make him look more astute)
turned insightful bicycle messenger.
This film starts out cool with some
psychotic stunts by biker pros, some
traffic slalom in New York, and a
cross-city race in San Francisco (this
movie doesn't know where it's taking
place), but the upbeatness soon be-
comes downbeatness when charac-
ters nobody cares about are intro-
duced and the story gets mixed up
as about six plot lines cross. The film
uses bikes as a vehicle for sales (no
pun intended), but it could easily be
done using something else. Nothing
new here.
Eliminators
I went to see Conan Lee in action
but was I disappointed. Take one
mad professor bent on time travel
and ruling ancient Rome, a man-
droid who is like a walking appliance
store and he wants revenge on the
doc who turned him into a robot, a
bitchy female scientist who is pissed
about her secrets being swiped and
throw in a lost ninja who is also seek-
ing revenge. If that's not enough, a
dork mercenary who is there for no
apparent reason except to stare at
the girls' tits. No redeeming value,
see it if you're bored.
STILL MORE
KUNG-FU is back with David Car-
radine playing Kain again and Bran-
don Lee (Bruce Lee's son), whoa
-action packed.
Why is it that you don't see films
come out that you really want to see?
Some of my favorite films are the
night TV. From Bruce Lee to Chuck
great Gung-Fu flicks we see on late
Norris to Jacky Chan, some people
real magic in them. This guy is using
don't look deep enough to see the
nothing but his bare hands to defeat
incredible odds, no guns or weapons
of any kind, just the skill that is avail-
able to anyone. I get sick of Rambo
clones that have got to use every
weapon available to stop the enemy,
what a pathetic pack of twerps.
Bruce Lee, the cult 'God of Gung-
Fu, didn't need anything but his bare
hands to stop an army. If he hadn't
have died, maybe we wouldn't be
bombarded by all this shoot 'em up
shit.
If it wasn't for Jacky Chan (you
might have seen him in The Big
Braw) I would have lost all hope. He
blends Gung-Fu with comedy, has
made countless films in Hong Kong
and is a sort of successor to Bruce
Lee. I really like Chuck Norris, but
he has got to stop making these hero
films. Another thing I've noticed is
the gore films are everywhere; good
AND bad, why not throw in some
gung-fu?
