A DAY OF
HELL
Formally called, "A Day Of Hell",
the skate event held in San
Francisco's Dish on October 5th is
model for a new contest format
emerging in skating, a get-together
of local skaters, free of commercial
ties and self-proclaimed organizers.
By and for skaters with the purpose
of a good time in mind. Situated
atop a hill in a housing project of
Hunter's Point, The Dish is a stone's
throw away from THRASHER'S
central office and has long been a
lunch-time skate stop and products
testing grounds for the staff. Aside
from offering one of the best views
of the San Francisco bay area, this
public skate spot is a great place to
go for a quick lesson in underworld

activities. During a session one
may witness several felonious
transactions as well as skate
several erroneous transitions, both
take a little getting used to but are
hardly noticed after proper
seasoning.
Inverting his talent at the Dish, Steve Yearsley
some extremely talented skaters
displaying previously unmapped
lines along the Dish's odd curves.
The crowd-pleaser of the day,
ollie-master and winner in
the middle-aged skaters was Steve
Yearsley from Santa Cruz whose
only competition for height in his
group seemed to be the sky. The
warm-up sessions in between
heats packed the small bowl to the
rim with so many grinding, snaking.
board-cracking skaters the aerial
view resembled a crazed colony of
ants swarming the sweet remains
of a picnic lunch. The old skaters
went last, showing the most
creative moves and drawing some
of the most legendary from out of
the woodwork. Included in this
class were Jake and Jay of local
Fogtown fame, skate-mascot
Pierre, world skate traveller Curtis
Ick from Red China, Ken Takeda,
Camden Scott and a host of others.
By 10 o'clock in the A.M. the
ashtray-like Dish was swarming
with skaters from all parts of the
Bay Area. Over 250 spectators and
75 registered skaters turned out for
an entire day of madness in warm
October weather. Skaters were
divided into 3 groups: young.
middle-aged and old (15 and under,
16-19, 20 and older). The young
ones skated first, showing
determination and promising
agressive attitudes. The winner in
this group was Noah Salasnek,
who tore apart the bumps and
banks of the dish and gained the
respect of the picky but enthusiastic
crowd. The 16-19 group contained

Camden took top honors with his
frestyle influenced repetoire.
Everyone decided to bail at the end
of the day to avoid a confrontation
by the now-angry and quite
territorial locals who had never
seen such a gathering of amped-up
whiteys in their lives. This type of
event reinforces the idea of kids
setting up their own competitions.
Bryce Kanights skater/photog-
rapher spent the better part of
September organizing this "Day of
Hell" by writing to sponsors Santa
Cruz, Madrid, Independent, Go
Skate, G&S, Skates on Haight,
Blockhead, Powell/Peralta and
Vision for prizes and spreading the
word through the local skate
community. His efforts brought
local skaters together for a good
time without the influence of
non-skaters, who tend to take away
from the true spirit of such events.
