The media is catching on to the spirit of youth typified by skating.
Television commercials now contain snatches of it - a vague
glimpse of some vertical action, three skaters sliding to a stop to
gasp at a giant product. Look how hip we are, they say, see the
youth? See the product? Remember when you were young? Im-
agine the feeling! Imagine the happiness, free-spiritedness and
enthusiasm. Imagine yourself in a better life. Buy.
Jake: "What do you think of pro vertical skaters skating at
streetstyle contests? I mean, sure, they try and they're pro
but certainly they're not the same caliber as you or Gonzales."
T.G.: "Well, most of them don't actually go out with five or six friends
streetskating. Like last weekend, I skated on Saturday for
seven hours all over San Francisco. We skated everything:
a little street ramp, a..."
Jake: "Would you ever want to be a pro vertical rider?"
T.G.: "No, I like it more for fun. Those guys take it real world serious.
They're going out there for the big bucks."
Jake: "Professional wind surfers make more than those guys."
T.G.: "Yeah, I think more money should be put into skating."
Caballero works the hill with a methodical, calculated pace. Tops
in the vertical field, he transplants this style to the street. Inverts
on the wooden curves, no hesitation as he goes from ramp to ramp
in a steady fashion and then launches himself frontside over the
car. The judges award him with fourth place.
Jake: "When you go to a contest like that, are there a few people
you have your eye on? Like Gonzales..."
TG.: "He's mad meat. Always..I'm thinking about what tricks he's
trying...He's always trying something new."
Gonzales begins his run. A skater rolls coffin-style in front of
him, Gonzo clears him easily with a loud crack, a knee-high ollie,
and continues down the hill. Suddenly back at the top there is a
scramble. Attention turns up the hill. There are only a few things
that would draw the scrutiny of the crowd away from this run, violence
is one. Mark notices the change in enthusiasm and stops to see
what the excitement is about. The crowd is gathered around a
contest security guard. Hired by the organizers and given a t-shirt,
he was told to keep order and watch out for trouble. He's never
seen a contest himself, but he believes he knows trouble when he
sees it. When the skater rolls out in front of everything, this is trouble.
He feels a strong sense of duty and immediately jumps on the
offender, using his position of authority to sanction the punches he
throws at the skater's face. The skater is Lance Mountain, asked
by Mark to help him in his routine. Punching Lance invites the wrath
of the crowd at the top of the hill; that's our star you're hitting. The
guy in the t-shirt is given a taste of his own medicine by the wary
spectators. Mark gets another run and the contest continues.
Of all the riders, it is Gonzales' simplistic, smooth style which
gives the impression anyone can ride like a pro. He approaches
the ramps with control and executes his tricks with such fluid motion
the board seems an extention of his body. A frontside boneless off
the pyramid ramp puts him over six feet in the air. He lands in a
carve, with no bounce or hesitation, and heads for the ramp attack
to car. A faultless frontside ollie to the hood and off signals an end
to this 40 second run. The judges give him third place, style and
near-perfect control are the factors. If only he hadn't bailed....
Jake: "What about that scene after the contest, in Derby Park,
wasn't that sick? Would you have ever tried to skate in that
bowl?"
TG.: "No... (laughing) There were about 90 guys in there, and they
drove that car in... Half of them were full-tilt blasted and the
other half were thoroughly buzzed. No one was sober."
Jake: "So what about the bad vibes at the Del Mar contest, when
you City Boys got rowdy on T. Hawk? You just over-amped
it, huh?"
T.G.: "Yeah, he's a ripping skater."
Jake: "His park may be gone now. Your skateboard park will be
here until the next earthquake."
T.G.: "I'll even be better after the earthquake. Cracks in the
sidewalk...ollie to the moon."
